wow what a lot of info to take on board!!

Feel slightly dizzy from it all!

So he asked how my pre op diet was going etc..been on the phone for an hour!

We've talked through my bad habits..main one being alcohol..did you know there was 50 calories in one single shot of vodka with no mixer??!!

so on an average week i have basically been consuming the equiv of 2,500 calories just on alcohol?! jesus!!

Problem now is i feel so bummed about the whole alcohol thing! at 25 yrs old my lifestyle is going to have to change so much, and I'm so sociable going out to the bars are a big part of my life..think this is what I'm really going to struggle with

The other annoying thing is I'm going to Egypt 5 weeks after my surgery, and THG said i could have a fill before i go, now the dietician (who is surgicare) has said no absolutely not!! Which means it is going to take a helluva lot of will power since it was all pre booked and it's bloody all inclusive!!!

I know it may seem like these are trivial things to others but I really want my band to work for me and these are my frustrations :(

You're having 50 shots of vodka a week? How many times you go out?

I didn't have a drop of alcohol for the 12 months post op they recommend!

Yes there are 50 calories in vodka but compared to wine, beer, lager or cider its not so bad. Its what you mix with it that makes a difference.

Im afraid your lifestyle will change post op but thats a good thing right?

You will be eating less, making healthier choices, exercising more and losing weight. Theses positives will make everything worthwhile.

Its perfectly normal for a six week wait post op for a band fill. Surgicare may have said no because you are going away, what would happen if they put too much in for instance and you are ill while you are away.

Im sure your band will work for you but changes will need to be made. Good luck x

She is 25 - it's the norm isn't it!? lol I asked my dietician re alcohol and was just told that I would prob feel the affects a lot quicker - cheap date then eh!?

Seriously though, with all these 'addiction transfer' stories going around at the moment I think everyone should be watching their alocohol intake xx

From the Surgicare website, re GASTRIC BAND:

Facts About the Gastric Band

There are many misconceptions about obesity surgery, particularly the gastric band procedure so it is important you are fully informed of the facts before you proceed with this type of weight loss surgery. Your consultation is your chance to ask questions about gastric band surgery and put your mind at rest.Your surgeon will be able to offer you full explanations and answers to all of your queries
See below for some useful facts about the gastric band.

  • The gastric band can be kept in for life
  • The gastric band can be adjusted several times — some people gain optimum restriction after 1 adjustment, other patients require 5 or 6 or more
  • You can get pregnant with the gastric band
  • Once you are at the correct restriction you can enjoy a ‘normal’ diet
  • If you are following the advice of the dietitian you should be able to ingest a balanced nutritional intake
  • You will still be able to enjoy eating out
  • You can still consume alcohol
Hope that helps - you will be fine, you just might need to cut down :D

banders are not re plumbed and there for absorb alcohol in exactly the same way as pre op, they only way a bander would physically get drunk from less is if they were silly and drank on a empty stomach. Same rules apply as before be sensible with it, its common sense.

50 shots a week!

That is about 50 Units of just vodka a week, the safe limit for a woman is 14! So if you are drinking other stuff as well you are way over and should look at the health issues of that.

You will really have to change your lifestyle if you want the band to work.

we worked it out as 100 calories from the vodka and the other 1,500 from 2 bottles of wine which means it's only 20 shots, not 50. I say only, but you understand what i mean!

I can understand the shock of it on paper, but friends that have been to uni have and continue to drink double what i do so i appreciate it's over the weekly dose for a woman but what can i say,it's unfortunately my London lifestyle..so as well as developing a new relationship with food/drink, i now need to find some new friends :sigh2: without being able to tell the old ones about why i need to drink less

I understand the implications and the lifestyle change. It's just a lot that's all :(

No you don't - a true friend shouldn't judge you by the amount you do or don't drink..... it will be hard and we all binge drink - I still do occasionally - I am also lucky enough to have a lot of friends around me that support me 100% and would rather have me by their side drinking water than not at all - which could happen if I don't do something about my weight! xx

Thanks hun,

I'll be fine tomorrow! Just need today to digest all the xtra info i think!

xx

I'm sorry but i'm with a lot of people who think it sounds like a lot of alcohol to be taking on board! And i can't remember who said it but whoever thinks just cos your 25 you can be a big drinker i'm sorry but that's ridiculous. Just because other people drink more does it mean that your intake isn't so bad? I hardly drink at all so should that mean others drink less? Hmmm. Sorry but having heard of the strict discipline needed by banders alcohol just seems to be a empty waste!

2,500 cals a week over a year is potentially 3 stone you could have lost that you've drunk. I got this figure by multiplying 2,500 x 52 (weeks) and dividing by 3,000 which is the amount of calories less you need to take in to lose a 1lb in weight...

Sorry if i sound harsh but i know someone who is currently moaning there band ain't working, no way it could be to the amount of booze she can neck on a night out or the rubbish she eats in between....

You deffo need to be in the right frame of mind before you start and remember your band is just a tool..........

I appreciate the maths! Bit of en eye opener when it's put in that perspective

I understand that it's a tool i need to work with which is why I've been honest with my dietician and with the major thing I know I'm going to struggle with most. At least I'm self aware in what my biggest challenge is and will continue to be just needed to vent it before I have to accept it!
