Hi my name is Diane and i am currently waiting for gastric surgery. I have attended the seminar in Sunderland hospital and have received my letter for my 1st appointment arrived today which is in 5 weeks. I am very nervous about this whole change, not so much the actual surgery but the changes to a whole way of eating. I would love to chat to people who are at the stage i am at and even better if your currently on the Sunderland hospital waiting list. thanks Diane xx
Welcome to the group! It is daunting, the whole thing is daunting, but none of us would be here if we hadn't come to the conclusion that this is what we need in order to reach a healthy lifestyle. I am currently on holiday, my surgery is one month today and I am having moments of panic about what it will be like 1 year from now, if on holiday, what would I eat, how would it change the focus of the holiday for us..... But then things happen that remind me why I am doing this - not going into a restaurant because all the chairs have arms and I won't fit in them, being a hot sweaty mess, not being fit enough etc etc etc.
I am not in Sunderland but hopefully someone from the same area will be able to help.
can anyone advise what to expect on my first appointment with the bariatric specialist and dietitian? I am worried i may have put on more weight since my first visit to the seminar, will this have any affect on there final decision to give me the surgery...really worried...thanks Diane
It doesn't matter you just need to be honest with them in what you're eating and they can help you from there. Unless you record your weight today and try from today to then show you're making progress overall. Best thing you can do is be honest with them as it'll be a hard journey doing it on your own without their support x

Hi Starryeyed,
thanks for your advice. To be honest since i went to the seminar i think i have ate more, i think its psychological knowing i will be changing my entire eating habits. if that makes sense.
It does to me. I said goodbye to several different foods in the run up to surgery. Doing it mindfully helped me feel a bit more in control and avoid any panic binges.
Plus it's maybe worth mentioning a few of us have found we don't like or tolerate food we used to enjoy. I don't miss anything either. I enjoy a couple of squares of good chocolate now and then for example and have no desire to polish off a 200g bar. I generally consider food based on its protein content. The other thing a few of us do is write down everything we eat and drink. It helps me ensure a good gap between food and fluid and also keeps me honest
You can make a success of this surgery as long as you're honest with yourself and your team and we will help as much as we can x
Hi all, had my first appointment in august tier 1 with the nurse and dietitians, all went well except as i suspected i had put on a little bit weight since the seminar, only 1lb so wasn't too freaked out! I was advised to lose 12lbs before my next appointment and they were going refer me to the weight management classes near by, i have not heard anything and was quite surprised this morning to receive the copy of letter from hospital to my doctor about my last appointment, i thought i would be attending the classes ect by now but nothing! i'm getting very disheartened and wonder if ive just been lost in the system...
I've just had a loop bypass at Sunderland three weeks ago, but I had my seminar before the tier system was put into place, so I can't help you with that.
But, I'd phone up and ask. I always found the surgeon's secretaries helpful, I talked to Mr Schroeder's but you could try the others. If you ring and just ask where you are in the system they should be able to tell you.
Hi all, i eventually got my appointment to see the dietision and psychologist on the 29th of nov, i also have my wear living well programme sorted for 4 sessions started on the 21st nov. I am aware that after surgery you have to take vitamin D supplements but i have had them issued from the hospital today, is this right, before my surgery?

Yes I had this too it's to up your levels to a decent level before you have your op so it doesn't go to a dangerously low level straight after your operation. Perfectly normal x
