Taking medication whilst in hospital

For those of you who regularly take medication, did you have to manage without for a couple of days post op or were you able to swallow them whilst in HDU etc? I'm a bit worried about the withdrawals I get when I skip a dose of venlafaxine.

I took two carrier bags full of my own prescription meds to Salford and they were brilliant.

A pharmacist came to see me, they told me what was essential, what I could leave off. They crushed the ones they couldn't provide in liquid form...

There was a cabinet with a lock by my bed and we kept them in there.

phew that's a relief. I don't want to go from being a bypass patient to a psychiatric patient in the space of a few days lol.

If in doubt get the pharmacist to call you at home, leave a message with your bariatric nurse.

The staff at Salford went out of their way to crush and to get all pills down me with a lot of early care in the first days... and the nightstaff were excellent... and the pharmacy bought liquid meds where they could, plus sent me home with enough liquid meds to manage for a week.

Be sure to take your prescription list and meds with you, but if in doubt, I'd certainly speak to your bariatric team and go forward to the pharmacy since I doubt all hospitals are as efficient as Mr Ammori's teams at Salford.

I was the same as Bev, took all my own in with me. The pharmacist worked it all out for me and I had some crushed for a few days too....including anti-d's :D XX

I made an appointment with my GP about 2wks prior to my op and requested all my meds in liquid form. The ones that couldn't be taken that way were changed to a like medication for the few wks I needed liquids. The hospital was impressed that I had everything ready and saved them having to sort it out. It's worth going early as some of them may need to be ordered in specially. It also means you don't have to worry about it when you go home as some hospitals will only give you enough for 3dys.

In Sheffield you're advised to see your GP/Pharmacist first to get your medication switched to soluble or liquid form. Not all medications are licensed to be crushed so some preparation is needed before :)
