hi everyone, im sure this has been done before. could post oppers post a step by step into their surgery. highlighting: the hospital, the time you had to be there, the surgery, meds and tubes, toileting and when you were allowed home etc

thanks, i think it would be helpful to pre oppers

I had to be at the hospital for 11am on the Monday and i was weighed and then put into a gown and surgical stockings but then I was sat about waiting until 5pm then i walked to the operating room and was told to remove my underwear and climb on the table. The anesthetiser spoke to me and within minutes I was out for the count.
I don't remember waking up in recovery the first thing I remember is being on the ward about 9pm and my husband was there waiting for me. I was hooked up to morphine and I was in control of it, I hated it and as soon as I realised it was that making me feel really light headed I stopped using it, the pain wasn't too bad from the op but the wind pain hurt like hell. I was lucky and didn't need a drain and they glued up my 5 wounds so no stitches or staples either.
I was then transferred to a private hospital the next day as they needed beds so I volunteered to go so had a night in luxury I was then sent home about lunchtime on the Wednesday so all in all it went very smoothly I hope this helps xx

Okay here goes
I had been asked to take part in a documentary for the Hospital which was The Alexandra in Cheadle Cheshire. It was an NHS Operation but Blackpool PCT fund this way
12.00 Admitted met the camera guy he followed me to my room kept having to leave and come back in cos he couldnt get the wide zoom to work lmao!!
13.00 Dr Agwunobi came to see me we pretended that i hadnt signed the consent form so i had to pretend to do that
13.15 Met the Anesthetist
14.00 Attempted to put on the anti blood clot stockings the were too small so went to surgery in mt big green gown and huge paper knickers
14.30 after a small panic attack managed to go into room where they put me to sleep, Monitoring equipment was dodgy so had to wait for another one
17.30 was woken with pain to my chest like i'd been hit by a car
17.45 taken to Intensive care as a precaution as my O2 sats were low stayed there all night was able to get up for a wee at around 4.00am
07.00 given sips of water
08.00 Physio visited and helped me get up and about gave me an apperatus to increase breathing took to private room
Ignored for 24 hours not given a drink at all had to get it from tap in bathroom, only saw someone when they remembered to do my obs(no camera crew any more)
Never offered pain relief either.
Discharged next day at 11.00am
Pre care 10/10
care after op 0/10
Post care 7/10

just posted my ongoing experience in my diary. unfortunately a lot of it so far has been like lotsabeefys story re the poor aftercare.
forgot to mention in my diary that i spent most of last night awake because the faulty machinery kept beeping all the time. I took my breathing tube out because it annoyed me so much and they didn't notice til the morning, just as they didn't notice my canula had been knocked out.
Yet they've just come in and pinched my half drunk cup of coffee lol.

I arrived at the hospital at 7am checked in the admin office made my first payment that was already pre arranged with the hospital. Sat in the waiting room for a few min got escorted the the pre operative room. They asked me several questions to verify everything put in my iv, had me gown up, took blood, ect. I had to wait their for an hour or so which was okay. I was allowed one person in with me so my mom and I played a game on my phone. I was then wheeled to a second room right outside of the operating room. My Mom was allowed in as well. This is where I saw my surgeon for any last min questions and met the anistesiologist. Honestly it wad my first break down I got so overwhelmed I started to cry... I had never even been in the hospital before the anestesiologisy was wonderful and gave me something to calm my nerves. I only sat there for 30 min or so. I was wheeled into the or and mom went to the waiting room. It was very painless in the or I remember ppl talking to me then they laid my arm out on a extension of the table don't know why. Probably to hook me up. Then the mask came over my face and I remember them saying deep brethes... I woke up in the recovery room twice. Lol apparently I woke up and they were going to move me to a room and I feel asleep again so had to stay a little longer. I was very woozie. I remember trying to focus on the clock and it was slowly getting more and more in focus. My operation went beautifully as I was told several times by the surgeon and staff. Only 80 min. I was wheeled to my room. Shortly my family was up to see me. I had my iv and a finger clamp on for bp. About an hour after my surgery I was up walking around pushing my iv with me. I had a wrap around my waist that held everything in place. You have to wear it whenever your up and please do. It's not pleasant without it. I also was able to get up and pee the first two times it burned from the cathater but other then that it was pretty easy. They gave me a food tray for breakfast lunch and dinner with broth, frozen super free sorbet, water, crystal light packet, protein shake, and decaf tea. They gave me shot glasses and a chart. I had to drink two shots of my choosing every hour and log it. I had to spread them out and drink very slowly. To my surprise it did not hurt at all just hard to do. They also gave me ice water with a sponge to wet my lips which were very dry. I had to go for three walks a day and before I went to bed they put leg massagers on me to prevent blood clots. All of my pain meds went into my iv the first day. The second day I was up to 4 food shots every hour and liquid pain med by mouth no iv but they left the part in my hand to give me quick med just in case. Was able to wear some pjs I had brought which helped a lot I moved my banned around my waist on top of my clothes it was very itchy!! They tried to give me my vitamin, pain meds, and ulcer med all at one time I felt very sick very quick and they had to give me a quick anti nausea shot. It's very bad to throw up so say something if you feel like your going to!! My doc came to see me and I had to stay another night.. it is pretty typical but I was hoping. The beds were so uncomfy my mom went and got my icy hot to rub on my back. Honestly that was the majority of my pain.

My story is a good one! I was with Mr Ammori's team at The Spire in Manchester (Private Bupa Hospital but I was NHS)
Arrived at hospital at 1.00pm as was told I was on the afternoon list. Was able to have breakfast at 7am.
Hubby with me all afternoon and had a lovely room.
Mr Ammori came to see me around 2.00ish to go through the operation and sign consent form and he was followed by the anaethetist who was equally as lovely and went through few bits.
Got a couple of updates from nurses during the day about the schedule and found out I wasnt going down until 6.45!
Got changed into lovely green gown and paper knicks around 6.00ish. (First time anything too big for me - chest size 70-90" - one size fits all!) Gave hubby a laugh!
Nurse and porter came for me and we all walked to theatre. Hubby came down in lift and said goodbye at door and then went and lay on couch. Anaethetist and nurse came in and the canula was put in my hand. Slow anaesthetic put in to relax me and then anaethetist said he was giving me an anti-sickness drug which might make my arm tingle - it didnt, but I did tingle down below and the nurse said this was normal!! He then came back in and said he was going to put me to sleep now and we started chatting about holidays!
Next thing I know I was in my room with hubby looking at me smiling! I had an oxygen mask on, drip in my hand (same canula as before) and a pair of inflatable stockings on my legs for DVTs. Felt fine but very sleepy as it was 9.30pm by now and full of anaesthetic. Went to sleep for an hour and then at 10.30 opened my eyes long enough for hubby to say goodbye.
Woke at 2.00am for a week and had to use a commode as blood pressure fell when i tried to stand and went a bit faint. Nurse was lovely and afforded me dignity. Went again at 4.00am (due to IV fluids) and at 6.30am felt ok to go to en-suite on my own. Didnt eat until lunch and had some clear soup and a bit of tea. Felt great - no problems. Still needed oxygen but mask changed for nasal tube which just slots in nose and goes around ears! Dinner was more clear soup and some ice-cream - which was lovely! I was then discharged at 7.00pm and was fine on 40 minute journey home. Wounds are tiny and dressings were off after 7 days! I know I am lucky and have had a great journey - lovely lovely surgeon and staff and cant recommend The Spire more highly - they made you feel like nothing was too much for them xx Hope that helps xx

I dont remember I slept right through it! (sorry its the Scouse sense of humour!)...... I will go away now.LOL

Arrive at hospital at 12 st Anthonys private hospital was booked into my room lol although i was nhs nurse came in took bp and pulse had an ecg then got told i was 1st on list for that days surgery so that was a nice no long wait. then got gown and stockings on then got weighed then at 2.15 nurse came in to say were ready for you in theatre so me and the nurse walked the very short distance to theatre as we came into theatre i saw the whole team standing there waiting with all the equipment and at that point i smiled one of the surgery team asked why i was smiling and i said this is what ive been waiting for and now its here this is the 1st day of the rest of my life she smiled back and said your 100% right there so hopped on the op table then had the anesthetic put in and just prior to going under i asked can you get it right 1st time please lol then next thing i was woke up to be told all was ok and no leaks then nodded back off didnt wake again till 6.30pm when i woke and thought omg i need a drink the nurse was there and gave me very small sips of water the total time from going to surgery to being back in my room was 2hrs 25min and from then on i have felt brilliant ever since no pain no nausea no nothing so in all a thoroughly enjoyable experience lol total time in hospital was 49 hours from going in to going home and ive gotta say i have no regrets what so ever.
