Hi Everybody
As you know I was at a WLS meeting yesterday . I asked why the hell do the NHS send us to England for the surgery and they said it was all down to politics well thats nothing new over here . This woman has already had her surgery there in May at Charing Cross , and I said how do you get from the airport to the hospital (Heathrow to Charing cross) she said you get a taxi and you ask the taxi man for a recipt and you claim it back . Well I dont know how far it is from them two points but it cant be cheap . So that means to say I`ll be getting a bus from Derry to Belfast return fear about £27 then plane the hospital said I have to have three seats thats return five days hotel , taxi to and from the airport and the surgery . Its b***dy madness I know I shouldn`t be moaning and I know I`m not the first and I wont be the last but it is silly when they could do the surgery in N.Ireland . I think the is sainer people in the asylum . Take care .

Crazy for sure xxx

I agree, it is madness. However, wls is very specialised and the current system is probably much cheaper than setting up a unit in NI.

If you do want to get from Heathrow to CX by public transport, but why would you when you can claim back a cab fare, the tube line from Heathrow to Hammersmith (the nearest tube stn) is the Piccadilly line with no changes. CX is then about a 10-15 min walk or short cab ride away.

I don't think getting the tube train back to Heathrow would be a good idea. I don't think CX would let you do it anyway.

HTH.

Hi John
I was told yesterday that the is two bariatric surgeons in Belfast already .
I google world from Heathrow to Charing Cross and its only 12.9 miles .
How are you keeping John did you get one of them lung machines ?
Take care .

Well if there are 2 bariatric surgeons in Belfast I am befuddled! Even madder than I thought.

It is about that distance to CX Hospital cos CX Hospital is not in Charing Cross...:D Well it used to be before they moved it to Hammersmith a few decades ago.

Yes I have had a cpap nearly 2 years now. I am in love with it . Still, I can't wait to dump it in a few months. Fickle? Moi?? :D

Hi marg :)

I just rang a local cab office for you to get a quote because even though it is only 12 miles the cost for a cab isnt cheap at all.

He said that if you try to get a taxi at the airport (heathrow) to bring you to Charing cross without pre booking it, it will cost you in excess of £60 possibly £75.

If you have pre booked a mini cab to collect you at Heathrow it will usually cost around £45.

I know the guy I asked and he is usually accurate with quotes etc. I wouldnt advise you use them though as they are in east london lol and Heathrow is way out the other side West.

It might be an idea for you too google minicab offices near to heathrow and see if you can telephone them, get a quote and pre book one.

Good luck

ha ha my head is spinning just reading this, i used to work for the NHS and had a poster in my office saying "you don't have to be mad to work here but it helps" ha ha and how true was that. I do not understand any of it, it is sheer politics gone mad.

Hi Marg

Just to let you know that its 12.4 Miles from Heathrow Airport to Charing cross Hospital Via Car and also the Picadilly train line goes from heathrow (all terminals) and its 11 stops to Hammersmith where the Hospital Is located. HTH

All the best - MeJulie x x

I have prebooked transport in London through Londontown.com several times before. I usually end up doing it for my family when they are flying into Gatwick.

come live with me margaret not alot of room but we could manage hugs xxx

Hi Margaret

it doesn't make sense does it

If you can claim the cab fares back, them definately use a cab as the public transport can be tricky if you've got luggage :)

It does sound daft to send you to London from NI for WLS.

I wonder if it has something to do with the cost of the operation. Charring Cross is a teaching hospital isn't it? so they might be funded differently and so be able to do the operation cheaper than they can get it done in NI. Although your transport costs will add up to several hundred pounds it could still cost them a heck of a lot cheaper than doing it elsewhere.

Cannot be sure as I have no real idea, but if it's not cheaper to do it at CX, it makes no sense at all

Good luck with it wherever they do it x

Definitely pre-book a minicab. Minicabs aren't allowed into Heathrow unless they've been pre-booked. if you just show up and wait you'll have to get a black cab and they're much dearer. I'm overseas at present but when in London we live 2 streets away from CX Hosp and minicabs are a better choice - it can be stressful being stuck in traffic in a black cab watching the meter rise and rise and wondering if you have enough cash on you. With a minicab, you know the cost for sure on advance.
Also, if you book a minicab they should meet you at the arrivals area which means you'll get a hand with your luggage, if you go queue then you have to drag your luggage to the queue and sometimes you can wait ages if there aren't enough black cabs there.
I always used KB Cabs of Lillie Road, they're literally 2 streets away from the hospital so they're a handy number to have while you're there. I've always found them to be reliable and they can collect you from Heathrow their tel no is 020 7381 8888.
