The one minute rule?

Spoke to the consultant today and said that I need to leave a 1 minute gap between the time you swallow to the next mouthful FOREVER!
How will I be able to have an occasional treat and eat out? And now I'm worried that people will notice and think I'm strange (not that they already do) x

It's so annoying isn't it? I wasn't told do do one minute between mouthfuls, rather to put my cutlery down and chew slowly. I'm really getting sick of eating cold food :(
Maybe in time we'll be able to speed it up a bit, but for now, it's for our own good x

My provider actually gave me a timer, although we are to eat and chew and then when we've finished use the timer for 30 seconds, this means that each mouthful/chewing would last for a minute in total, so 20 mouthfuls as a meal shouldn't extend beyond 20 mins.

In the short time I've been using my timer, you actually pick the time up quite quickly so you do get used to the sort of time that you would leave between the next mouthful. And to be honest, if you're eating with others, chatting away, people may not even notice :)

I'm at least 30 mins for a cat plate size. Sometimes I take longer.

Eating out in public can be a bit weird and I've taken to avoiding it with any strangers at the table. Hopefully things will improve as time goes on.

I leave several minutes between each teaspoon of food, and I've got used to the cold food and don't really mind it now.

Changes for life. Better this than being fat.

Don't worry Shabbs, it will become second nature. You will be able to eat out etc BUT you must get it into your head that even if you can now, you soon won't be able to rush food. Slow right down now and when you have really good restriction you will be prepared xx

you will manage to eat more if you do it slowly :) eating fast just makes you feel awful

I agree with Mazza. It becomes second nature to chew more and eat more slowly. I really don't think the the 20 20 20 rule necessarily needs to be so mechanically thought out ...

Maybe if I brought a book for lunch and knew that after every mouthful I have to read one page, it wouldn't be so hard with measuring the time. Though if I go for lunch with my colleagues or for a dinner with my husband it may appear to be a bit unsociable!

U will get used to it! It takes a while I set my stop watch up on my I phone and kinda scan that to see how long I am taking in-between mouth full.

But this is I find help me as I have always been a very quick eater

Weird, I have also always been a really quick eater. We had some competition in cake eating at primary school and even at that time, as a very young child, I could eat very quickly.

I was also told the 20-20-20 rule. chew for 20 times, wait 20 seconds for next mouthful then stop after 20 minutes.

I have eat out a few times and no-one even noticed what I was doing. Also at work no-one notices when I eat my dinner.

I'm only 7 weeks post op and find It's getting to feel quite normal to do this. Plus watching the 20 minutes eating makes you think about stopping before you get all bloated and horrible.

I am at a similar point to wobbly, although when I am at home, I do use my timer that my provider gave me to slow me down (I have a 30 chew, 30 wait, 20 min eat time rule), because the evening are always a rush, I find that it makes me really stop and think, but it is also helping me to learn the difference of eating until Im no longer hungry, instead of eating until I am full. A difference I never really thought I would learn . . .

This is one thing I may struggle with as I get more restriction! I was very aware of eating small mouthfulls very slowly at first, but as i've always been a really quick eater, I think i'm slipping back a bit. I was told to follow the 20-20-20 rule, but I had mash and minced beef and onion for lunch today and ate too quickly. Before I know it, I felt very full and uncomfortable. It's a massive learning curve for us all, we have to change a lifetimes worth of habits! At least we have our bands to help us along!!!
