Thyroxine

Katastrophe

Love My Bypass !
Hi all ,

Just wondered if anyone post op takes thyroxine and whether you had to have it in liquid form or not?

The tablets are really small so i'm not sure what would be best ?

Thanks :)

I am still pre-op and spoke to my chemist about getting my thyroxine in liquid form and he said it is possible but it is really expensive as it has to be made to order which takes 5 days and it will only have a shelf life of 30 days. When I asked how much it would cost the GP he said around the £200 mark. He advised me to get a pill crusher so that I can take the tablets after surgery.

Ooh didnt think of a pill crusher

Thanks Chrystal :D I see you're a few days after me , are you feeling anxious at all?

Hiya i take thyroxine tablets 175mg which as you will know is 3 small ones, ive been taking them ever since i had the op and dont have any problems taking them, the only thing i would say is tho i did take them one at a time to start with, then after a about 3 months post op i now take the 3 together, and it doesnt cause me any problems.

Hope this helps:)

Thanks Sharon, i was hoping they're small enough to take after :)

My multi vitamin i have to take is almost an inch long!

 I wouldnt fancy taking that pre-op let alone post-op lol

Hiya, thanks for this post, as I take thyroxine too,, 200 mg. I think the pill crusher may be a good idea, as I am on quite a few different tablets xx

I crushed mine and had it in water for the first 6 weeks as instructed x

Cant beat a good old pair of spoons!!! Put the pills between them and squish them and then add a little water/milk/juice and swallow them down. I used to mix them in with my antacids in the early days, they would all get crushed down in a bit of water and then swallowed, worked well for me.

I crushed mine with the back of a spoon its really easy, mix with a little water to help them go down easily. I then used a pill cutter later on for larger tablets until i was able to swallow them easily

Thanks for all the responses, i'll see how i go with crushing them first of all x

Hi,

My surgeon told me I could take them the day after surgery (after I had my Barium Test) as they are so small!

I was terrified at first so I asked a Nurse to sit with me when I first took them!

I took one at a time with a tiny sip of water and I never had any problems!

I'm on thyroxine and my hospital gave me all my meds in tablet form the day after my surgery (including paracetamols, blood pressure meds and codeine)
I was a bit nervous for the first dose but have not had any problems (even with the huge vitamin pills !)

Not feeling anxious as yet which I am finding surprising as this will be the first ever operation I would have. But I still have my pre-op appointment to go, so I think in my head they are going to tell me it is all off.

I think it might all become real for me when I start the liver shrinking diet on Good Friday

Oh god i've got to start my liver shrinking monday latest... Have to say i'm dreading it lol

I had to crush mine for the first 4 weeks cos a liquid form of thyroxine wasn't available - I had to have liquids or crushable for everything!!

I used 2 spoons and put the thyroxine in a small amount of plain yoghurt. Sometimes I hid it well - sometimes I didn't - I didn't always keep the dose down then ;)

It was a pain and I was glad when I could swallow them properly

Good luck

Angela xx
