Time off from work

Hi all,

I’m going private and having a sleeve in Jan. will I get a sick note from the surgeon or will I have to see my GP post op?

I’ve not told my boss, I don’t know where I stand with time off from work as I have chosen to have this surgery, I haven’t been referred by my GP.

I’m hopefully having surgery on a Friday which is my normal day off. I didn’t know whether to phone in sick on the Monday and self certify for a week then see my GP and get a ‘post op’ sick note for another week then explain all when I’m back. Or do I be honest with her and explain beforehand?? She is a funny one and her reaction could go either way. I would book 2 weeks off but I have no holiday left and really don’t want to take 2 weeks unpaid.

What did you do? Thanks in advance x

Hello and welcome!

I had my band privately and took a week off work as I wasn't covered for sick leave, as you said, it was elective surgery. My sleeve on the other hand, was semi elective, it needed to be done but wasn't urgent - therefore I was covered for sick leave.

How much time you'll need off varies from person to person, on what job you do and more importantly, which surgery you have.

I had a week off with my band and two with my sleeve, although to be honest, I could of done with another week. I work in an office some days but most days I do a lot of driving too but no heavy lifting.

I personally would always go with honesty being the best policy but that's just me and completely understand that some bosses may not be very understanding.

Good luck x

My work paid my sick pay and the sick note said abdominal surgery. All employers are different but my GP did refer me on the NHS so it was considered necessary surgery. Good luck to you xx

I had almost 2 weeks annual leave for my sleeve surgery but it wasn’t enough and I needed an extra week, signed off by the GP and my work paid sick pay x

I had a bypass a week ago and was told I could have a sick note which didn’t have to divulge my surgery details. I agree with being honest, but it’s not just about that. For me, it’s more about not wanting people to know- which you should have the right to keep private if you wish to do so. You could blame gall stones?
