trouble with pct :)

hi, i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. i've been trying to get funding for a band for around 2 years. my gp is supportive but is saying that in cornwall there is no provision for surgery and the only way forward is to go private!!!! i cant afford it or i would do it.:sigh: when ive looked on the web it says that cornwall follows nice guidelines but i cant seem to get any further forward...... please help as im really frustrated and dont know what to do. thanks tasha xxx

Hi Tasha, sorry can't help with funding query, but didn't want to read and run. I'm from sunny Cornwall as well but live in sunny wales now. I'm sure someone can help you here. I had to go private as Wales doesn't do WLS.

I'm just wondering here, but could the problem be that there is a lack of any expertise on weightloss surgery in Cornwall - it is a pretty specialised area and there only the 2 main hospitals in Cornwall. Is the problem that they would have to send you out of county? Maybe pursue this?

I know that of the measly and ethically wrong 12 ops that Wales does in a year most are sent to Bristol. Bristol hosps therefore getting money from Welsh Assembly

if your area doesnt fund WLS theres only 2 other options.

1. private surgery

2.tempory move to a good funding area and register under a good gp that referes patients and surgery is given frequently.

thats the harsh reality of it as wales is the same.

thanks for answering my question.... i suppose the reason im confused is because when i went on the pct website it said that it followed nice guidelines therefor surely they must do SOME wls....

It seems so unfair that irrespective of your eligibility for surgery it still depends on where you live. Its just not right!!
You could always stand as an MP at the next election - you could then get your second home here in Blackpool!! Great PCT

im not sure, but the gp should be able to find out for you snow.

hi tashaliza ok where do i start,yes cornwall pct do follow nice guidelines and thay do fund weight loss surgery i know this because thay paid for mine. but thay do not do any surgury in cornwall it is all done in either musgrove park hospitol in taunton.or the nuffield hospitol in taunton all done by the same surgeon. a mr r wellbourne and his team.where are you in cornwall? as this may depend on where your gp refers you if he refers to royal cornwall hospitol treliske your gp needs to contact mr jonathan pinkney who is the endocrinologist in charge of the referal process for all bariactric surgury in cornwall.if your gp suggests derriford hospitol in plymouth then he needs to contact a mr paddy english the endocrinologist in charge of the weight management team there.this is all quite new and only been up and running the last year or so so your gp might not know quite what is going on.

wow eggbat, thank you so much. that info is amazing..... im still at the stage of trying to be refered to treliske (i think) as i live roughly halfway between the two hospitals in a little village on bodmin moor. as you mentioned i've been trying to be refered to a surgeon for around 2 years but i keep being palmed off..... my gp keeps writing letters to the pct but we are getting nowhere
i will pass on all the info that you've given me and fingers crossed i will be refered. thank you xxx

I don't know if this is of any help, but when I was thinking about surgery I contacted the surgeon dealing with weight loss surgery at my local hospital directly by email. If you can find the chappie you're looking for on the hosptal's website, you could try giving that a go.

hi tashaliza just a bit more info it maybe of help ,when i first approched my gp it was about two years ago maby a bit longer he was very sympathetic but there was just no money then about four months later he told me after some chaseing up of people he refered me to mr pinkney who was fantastic and dealt with everything funding etc he put me through all the required tests and told me that the pct have to see a track record of trying and failing at other weightloss methods he also said that both the pct and the surgeon favor candidates that attend support groups of somekind ie bospa.i have attended bospa meetings both at truro and at saltash thay are very friendly and very informative and gives a tremendous insight into the whole process and the lives of people before and after it also helps you feel that you are not alone and there are many others in the same position

thanks eggbat and wibble, i will definately not give up im just feeling a bit sorry for myself as i feel that the longer i have to wait the bigger im gonna get
i will try to go to a support group if you think that will help? do they do anything online, as i live quite a way away from truro and saltash?

hi tashaliza i was only trying to give you an idea of different help and support available perhaps just concentrate on seeing your gp and hopefully your gp will get the ball rolling so to speak.be open with your gp and explian how unhappy the situation is makeing you.support groups can be sorted later...bestof luck
