Underactive Thyroid

Hi all. I've just had some blood results come back from my GP and it seems I have an Underactive thyroid... My weight loss has been very slow the past few months so I'm wondering if this has had an impact on things?? I have always had a problem with my weight even when I ate sensibly pre bypass I would gain weight. I have an appointment with my GP to discuss the results this afternoon so I will be a bit more knowledgable about things once I have seen him, I just wondered if anyone else on here has UA thyroid problems and what you have been given to treat it etc. Many thanks In Advance Tracey xx

Hi, I've been on levothyroxine for about 8 years. I also had trouble losing weight pre op even on diets. I still only lose 1-2 lb week when many others lose much more and I'm only 4 months out. I don't know if its the main reason why but if you are on this med I can tell you that it means you don't have to pay for any prescriptions and its a big help when you're on so many in case you do pay for them at the moment x

Thank you for your reply ..
Doctor wants me to wait a fortnight and repeat the test.
If it's still the same and not just a "dip" then I will be put on meds for it.. My weight loss has just ground to a halt even though I eat very little carbs and am 1200 cals a day or under..
It's been a pound loss here and there for the last few months Which is sooooo annoying when I know I am following the rules..
I can stall for weeks...
I've even joined the gym to help try and boost my losses ..
Fingers crossed things will change soon as I've felt unwell for ages .. X

Thyroxine has an impact on metabolism amongst other things, if low can lead to weight gain, dry itchy skin, always feeling cold, hair loss and fatigue

I have all them symptoms but am glad my GP isn't jumping in with meds without retesting me first ..

Thank you x

I've had this for about 20 years. Just tabs every morning. Curiously with my bypass over time my meds are increasing.

Hi Valentine I have very under active thyroid . Diagnosed around 11 yrs ago. Im on 175mcg levothythroxine per day so a high dose was on 200. Im 5 mths post op. Yes it does a impact on lose and like your other readers say you have a slow metabolism hair loss fatigue etc . Best to get treatment asap you get free prescriptions also as its a life time condition so if you are on other meds like i am its a plus. You will feel better on treatment. X

Thank you for your replies..
I know it's quite simple to treat as my mother in law to be has it.. She had her thyroid gland removed in a major surgery quite some years ago.
Just wanted another bypassers opinion about its affects on losses..
Your all very kind with your pearls of wisdom ...
Thank you very much xx

:) Hi everyone I have an UT and have done for many years. I was always slim before being diagnosed. The diagnosis took a long time. I kept having to go back as I felt exhausted and started to gain weight. Also I became depressed for no reason.

Once I was finally diagnosed, I was told that I would qualify for a medical exemption certificate to enable me to get free prescriptions for life. I asked my GP as to why, and he said it was because if I didn't take the thyroid meds everyday I could go into a myxoedema Coma.

I do feel better for taking the thyroid meds and I'm hoping the sleeve will help me to take some control back. I can't blame my UT for all of my weight gain although I do find it really hard to lose any amount of weight. My surgeon has recommended a sleeve and said I will lose a lot of my excess weight, but will have to work harder at it.

Anyone else out there with an UT a couple of years post op would like to hear about your weight loss.

Even with the meds I find it almost impossible to lose weight. Maybe a pound here and there.
