Very interesting article on obesity in Guardian

A very good read .;)

If you Google the article name along with the author's name, you can still read it.
On the face of it, it is an interesting concept, but not a new one by any means...scientists have known for years that 'junk food' is addictive ( and a big money industry too, but that's another thing).
However to blame the ever-rising global obesity prevalance on people solely eating foods laden with high levels of sugar, salt & fat is far too simplistic...btw, bear in mind this article is an excerpt from the author's book, which he is obviously trying to sell...!!!
Obesity is a complex disorder which it still very poorly understood.
There is a genetic element..some people are predisposed to being fat due to genetic polymorphisms inherited from their parents.
Environmental influences play a huge role...even if you have inherited the 'fat' gene, well-balanced healthy meals & regular exercise from an early age means you probably won't end up fat. Another aspect of the environmental impact is the huge growth in technology...it's more likely that kids are sat on their bums watching TV, on computer games or on a computer than 40 or 50 years ago...most people have a car...we have all these labour saving devices now...washing machines, hoovers etc...several decades ago people simply had more active lives!
Very new concepts in ideas behind obesity are always coming out: one is over 70% more likely to be fat if you don't get a good nights sleep compared to lean counterparts. Gut mircoflora is now considered to play a role in the amount of calorific intake gleened from food during metabolism. This list is endless...will we ever really know why some people are fat vs other people who lead identical lifestyles? Eventually I am sure we will, but I think it is still a long way off yet!
