vitamin deficiencies

Hi just wondered if anyone else has had to take foreceval and calci chew d3 forte and have vitamin b12 injections before their bypass. My bloods at my pre op assessment showed that I was really deficient in vitamin D and vitamin B12 and also very low zinc levels, so for the 2 weeks up until my surgery I am having B12 injections 3 times a week and am on forceval and calcichew D3 forte. Just wondered if this was unusual or if other people have also had this problem before surgery...

I'm vit D deficient and have been for over a year. My level was 12 at my initial blood test , and after taking calichew twice a day for over a year, it's still only 15. I've now been referred to a specialist to find out why my body is not absorbing it.

Thanks for replying!! that must be really worrying for you. I hope you will let me know what the specialist manages to find out. I know I asked my dietician why I wasn't absorbing Vitamin D and B12 and zinc, and she just said its probably because of poor diet and not enough sunshine!! Hoping the injections and the calcichew and forceval will get my levels right before I have my op on the 9th though..

thanks.. Really hope the specialist can get to the bottom of it for you...

I had RNY 5 months ago & am struggling with my albumin level which is my protein & my potassium. I'm also lactose intolerate, I've tried the silk almond soy milk but it tastes to sweet, anything really sweet makes me nauseous. Does anyone have this problem & have any suggestions? I would appreciate any help..

No I've not tried rice milk, I will definitely give it a try. So far I've just tried the silk milk but it's not agreeing either. I'm really struggling with the protein. The bars are to sweet to. My hair is really coming out & I'm really getting worried. Do you know if the B12 shots could help with this?

Hair loss is part of B12 deficiency, so the injections should help. You sould try the lactose free milk. My friend uses it and she says it tastes just like milk. You can buy it in all the supermarkets, next to the milk. You could also try goats milk but it's a bit sour. Or unsweetened soya milk.

Thanks so much Paula I will definitely give it a try, I'm getting really desperate.. :)

if you are struggling to get your protein in, then why not buy some soya protein powder. you can get the soya protein isolate powder which is really easy to digest and very high in protein, but low in calories. I bought mine online for after surgery to make sure I get enough protein.

Health food shops. Holland and Barratt have it on offer. People swear by it. I've got some ready to have before my op

I think holland and barrat only do the soya protein powder. The soya protein isolate powder is even lower in calories and much more easy to digest, I might be wrong, but couldnt find any isolate at holland and barratts last time I checked. I got mine from www.pro-10.com. You can also order the sample sachets so you can try the different flavours...

I'm really sorry Amanda577 I meant the Sea Kelp tablet. I got caught up in 2 different conversations.

LOL!! that's okay I do that all the time...

Hello I take the daily b12 liquid from holland & barret & my b12 seem to be ok they were to high to begin with but fine now x

does that mean rainbow27 that you don't have to have b12 injections because you take the liquid b12?? If that is the case I might try it also after I have had my bypass, as really hate having the injections..
