Waiting for bypass/pre-op appointment

I am still waiting for my phone call for my pre-op date and to be honest I think I am having doubts. I come on here most days at least twice a day and read all the blogs but today I was reading about all the medication you have to take and the food you eat. I am a very fussy eater and I can't help wondering what I would live on after the bypass. I was excited last week when I got told it would be June only by secretary not 100%.
today not so excited even sat and wrote a pro's & con's list.

Tried talking to my other half and he just says well if your thinking like that you shouldn't have it done then! But that doesn't help I do want it done (I think) but there's so much to think about all the med's and what to eat from before to liquid to pureed to solid, the pain sickness dumping so much, I couldn't afford to be ill my house would crumble around me. Gosh I am so confused.

I've been big all my life and struggled with my weight for 26 years I have tried everything diets toning tables hypnosis slimming pills and even speed, but piled the weight back on. I know I'm probably just being stupid and will have the op but just needed a release.

Hey, I'm having the exact same feelings as you. Some days I just can't wait and would have it don tomorrow if I could. Other days I'm filled with dread and worried I'm doing the right thing. I can't imagine what life would be like after and I'm really scared. Its this just the roller coaster of emotions you go through while we wait for our op day. I which I could say something to help but I just don't know what that would be xx

Hi
You know you really want this,
It's just a case of the unknown....
We all go through these feelings and I will be honest and say at first it's tough, you may regret the operation big time.
But give it time, you'll get used to a routine and your new healthy food.
It's all worth it when your doing things you've never been able to do,due to your weight.
And having people tell you"you look fantastic"is definetly a bonus!
Good luck xx

You just did! Knowing I'm not alone and going mad helped. Even though you read all the info on here and people's own experiences you still feel like your the only one having these doubts, then you start thinking I must be mad to even think about not having it done. It is such a high roller coaster that were on when your low it's a big fall. I will be ok like you said it's just anxiety of the unknown.

Thank you Ali x

Your right I do want this and it is the fear of the unknown and the fact that I like most of us women run their households, and I know mine will be a war zone without me there to cook clean and control it. It's everything the med's the pain the food it's so much to think about. But yes I do want this op. I am surprised how quickly my emotions have changed from being so excited to having this dread and fear. When I did my pro's and con's the pro's won lol.
I have got through much worse situations in my life. This is my first blip. Lol

Thank you Ali x

I am three weeks post op I have'nt had any pain I had paracetomol while in hospital nothing when I came home 2 days post op the vitamins are not the best but once you get into a routine they are not so bad best of all I have'nt been hungry at all first time in my life in the last month I have lost 38lbs . The way I looked at it I was walking time bomb at my heaviest so the the risks of the operation far weighed out the benefits. I hope you make the right decision for you as you are the only one that can do this . best of luck Wendy

Thank you Wendy.
I think maybe I had an information overload, I was reading all the stories on here and researching different things on the net, And I had bombarded myself with facts.
I know as the doctors have told me the chances of me surviving a heart attack are 5% as I am so over weight and also smoke, which I am also trying to give up too before I get my pre op appointment.
My problem is I analyze everything before it's even happened, I'm not much of a positive thinker and have very little if any self confidence. So already have failure on my mind. Before I have even start. You see so many people that have had it done look truly amazing and I think yeah but I will be the one where it doesn't work, then I tell myself don't be stupid it will only not work if I don't let it and continue eating. I guess like you all say it's just that fear of the unknown. I am sure I will be up again sooner than I know it. But thank you for taking the time to comment.

I'm glad I helped. It does help to know other people are feeling the same. I can only imagine anyone who has been through this has had exactly the same feelings. It's only natural. Seeing the before and after pics on here helps. Where all doing this for the same reason. A longer and happy life. Hope your feeling better about it. Xxx

Your reply made me smile,I too thought the house would go to pot! While I was recovering.
But the kids and hubby was fantastic!
Saying that,I made sure everything was organised before I had my op,I made sure I had the equipment and foods to make things easy for after the surgery.
It really helped me think postive and not worry so much by getting organised for my operation.
And I'll be totally honest and thought the pain after the operation wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be.
Infact I got told off by the hospital nurses for not using my morphine!
The painkillers they give you on discharge will get you through.
The best advice I can give you is to get organised, you'll feel so much better for it.
When are you having your op?

Hi hun

Really surprised you have not heard yet. It might be worth you calling the Chelsfield and ask to speak to Sheila. I know when my name was supposed to be sent to the Chelsfield upon checking with Sheila (Bariatric Nurse) I was not in the list.

Good luck x

Hi, I was just wondering if you had considered a Sleeve Gastrectomy? If you are concerned about all the meds you will need post-op then this could be worth a look. Obviously you must listen to your healthcare team's advice but ultimately it is your body and your decision. You have to go with what will work for you and what you can work with. Hope that makes sense!

So pleased for you, didn't have my pre op until about 3 days before surgery and only found out the day before the appointment.

Wishing you the very best of luck on the pre op diet, it will all be so worth it.

Best wishes

Hi Kim have you started to notice the changes? How much did you lose on the pre-op and how do you know what is about right what if I don't lose enough to shrink it.

Thanks for your support.

Hi Ali just follow the diet and you will be fine eat all the things that they say and you will not be hungry either so try to eat the eggs as well as they do fill you up. Take care on the sugar free jelly as they really upset my stomach. You might be fine but just be carefull it may have been because I did eat a pint of it and i don't even like jelly. I think we were all worried that our liver wouldn't shrink which is a good thing as it will make you stick to the diet. all the best. Wendy

The liver shrinkage diet is mainly for what it says, weight loss is a bonus. Having said that I did lose 18lb. All I can say is stick to it. You often hear about others that have had a 'bad day' and 'woops had Chinese last night', it's really not worth it hun.

Mr El-Hasani will not take risks, and I was told on my pre-op assessment that 3 NHS patients had recently been put out and their livers had not shrunk so he did not perform the op. They are still waiting for another date.

It will be hard the first few days but you will soon get into the swing of things.

Best wishes

Thanks Wendy,
I didn't know I was allowed eggs? When the sheet says green salad does that include spring onions too they are partly green and celery. I am such a fussy eater but I do like salad and fruit. I was told berries are better than the normal oranges apples pears so that will be strawberries for me then and how much of this can you eat? Is there a limit to how many oxo's you can have in a day or how many sf jellies? And is it ok to bake the chicken rather than grilling it? How many eggs are you allowed daily?

So if I had say pink grapefruit for breakfast and a cup if tea then water in between oxo for lunch sf jelly water in between then chicken or egg salad with a cup of tea would that be ok and if I felt hungry I could have another sf jelly later on or a stick of celery?

I have been trying very hard I used to drink a lot of coke and loved bread but this last week I have cut out bread and had no coke so I am doing ok. I also quit smoking kept saying I was going to but then didn't my mum dad and oldest son smoke so they are around me a lot. But that is not an excuse any more as I thought last night they will be around me eating food too so does that mean I won't be able to stop that too! NO I said now get a grip and leave those cigarettes behind so I have, that's it I'm done smoking done it for 25 years too long packed up every time I was pregnant stopped for a year and started stopped for 8 months and started but no more.

Sorry that was a bit long lol.
