New Member
Hi, i have just read that the weight management course i will have to attend before being considered for surgery is 3hrs a week for 12 wks...... Is this right? What on earth am i going to say to work?......an hour probs would have been ok , but 3????
Feeling all negative again now and ive not even seen the dietician yet.... :(((

Hello! If you are referring to my post, Dr told me 2 hours is diet and 1 hour is exercise. Most areas have evening classes. I have also read that sometimes you can go and do 6x fortnightly ones . I'm really hoping that's the case . Don't be downhearted though as lots of people doing the course must be working also. I hope to hear from them soon and will let you know what they said x

Because this weight management course is pretty much mandatory for anyone going through the NHS route, they always try to be as flexible as possible with appointments, some even offer classes on Saturdays. And you could always negotiate with work like I did, if you can. Like get to work 1h earlier or leave 1h later 3 days a week to make up the day you need time off or use a holiday day each week. Explain it's only temporary, and that it is something you have to do for your health.

Just tell them the truth :) they cannot fire you for it because you are doing it for medical reasons.

Let me know how you get on, and good luck x

The post I just wrote vanished! Anyways ... I negotiated with work to use some holiday days for some of my appts and for some I started 1h earlier or left 1h later a few times a week. Is this an option for you? Tell them you need to do it for medical reasons and it'll be temporary.

Good luck and let us know how you get on x

Thanks, this isnt an option for me though, im a ta in a school so get set holidays, hopefully it will be in the evening or after 3.30pm, xx

As this weight management courses are becoming pretty much the norm for everyone going the NHS route, I'm sure they'll be flexible with the time. The place I go, Spire Southampton had classes until 6 pm :)

I'm sure you'll be ok x

In my case, it was a 6 months thing, saw the therapist 4 times, exercise specialist once and dietitian 6 times, last one being today. It's always a one to one thing, and you're weighted privately. You might be asked to keep a food diary as well, like a did. I wasn't given any specific goals, just to try my best.

If you're like me, and you've dieted for a while, you'll probably hear a lot of stuff you already know, but try to take it on board because they wanna see that you're engaged with the program. I lost a few pounds then put them on and I wasn't told off but she did ask me to try a bit harder.

Don't be afraid to talk to the therapist lol as soon as he asked how I was I burst into tears hahah. I hope this info helps, I'll post here again after my appointment.

Hope you have a good day!

I saw the dietician today and will be going 6x fortnightly but it may be another month when I get my first appointment so don't know the times yet but that will give me 4 months to lose 5% or a stone. X

All weight management courses are different in each area. I live in sheffield, I had monthly appointments to asses how I'd gotten on, and weekly appointments with a CBT dietician, mine lasted for 12 weeks and all appointments were worked out around what I could attended..
What works for one person, doesn't work for the other!

I will add to this, I was already in a GP referral scheme with my local gym.

I had to chase after my first appointment, i'd say if you haven't heard in a couple of weeks, make some calls :)
