After reading that someone was turned down for surgery am starting to worry i won't get mine.

When i had my initial appt at WM Ana said i'd get surgery in about six months, does this mean that if there is funding i'm definitely gonna get my bypass?

My stats are bmi 45 and i have type 2 diabetes....

Please oh great and wise ones give me words of comfort and wisdom!!! :kissass:

Hi Julie

I would say that you definitely fit their criteria for WLS with your stats...but every PCT is different...but if you are talking Walsall Manor, there are so many on Mini's that have had their surgeries there that it won't be long before you'll get the real deal.

good luck

(((hugs)))

Sorry I am late replying to this, but am only just managing to catch up. Every PCT are different in their funding criteria, they use the NICE guidelines as just that guidelines for sertting their own criteria.

Some PCT's like Birmingham East & North, South Birmingham and Sandwell use the basic guidelines, but Heart of Birmingham and especially Dudley for instance have a very high criteria to meet before surgery is even considered. If you have got to the stage you have at WM then you meet the criteria, as normally they don't even send you fro your initial appointment. Now it's just waiting on funding and your pre op tests, but Ana sounds confident so try not to worry - easier said than done I know.

Hi you would probably get the funding in my area because their criteria is bmi>40 with sleep apnea or diabetes. There is no other criteria other than that. The nice guidelines say people with a bmi>50 should be offered surgery but my pct said I didn't qualify even with a bmi of nearly 60. Good luck hope you get your surgery.

Hi Sharon :)

I'm a little confused reading this post as it seems to be saying that the other lady would get funding in Cambs with BMI >40 + diabetes etc but then you say they won't give you funding despite having a BMI of almost 60?

I'm also under Cambs PCT and have BMI 42 with Type 2 diabetes so I'm real hoping to get the funding! The Whittington have already approved my referral so now waiting to go through the various appt stages.

Which hospital have you been referred to?

ETA: Don't worry, having read it again I now realise it's because you don't have diabetes. I've not had enough coffee to wake up properly yet lol

It really doesn't seem fair does it. I posted another thread yesterday as I found information that quite a lot of PCTs, especially in East Anglia are going against NICE guidelines and only offering surgery to those patients with diabetes too.

However, it did say that those who have a BMI>50 would be considered for surgery if they appeal to East of England Specialist Commissioning Team (EOESCT). It is definitely worth pursuing hun!

Basically all areas of the UK are mostly different, according to how much they want to spend. Wait till some of you have to fight for possible plastic surgery afterwards to get rid of excess skin - that will be a job and a half.
