What Can I Expect?

Hi Everyone

I have already had my group meeting last month and I am to have my one-to-one with surgeon (hope it's with him) next Friday...

What should I expect?
What Sort of questions will I be asked?
What sort of questions should I ask?
Will I be told on this day if I can have the op or not?
Is there anything I should take with me?

Please help because I have gone a bit brain-dead and all the research I have done seems to have left me.

Of course I will be honest with him given some of test I have had recently...(one still outstanding)...

Different hospital but here's what happened on my first appt (WM dont do a group meet before). I saw the nurse specialist (Ana) who asked what i wanted doing, i told her GBypass and she said good choice, proceeded to show me a pic of how the op works and gave me leaflets about diet etc. then i sat and waited for consultant. He asked me about medications/illness'es etc and then proceeded to tell me about the bypass operation. Told me to go off to reception and book next appt for 4months time...

But they're all different so i hear...

Hopefully someone will be along in a minute who has used your pct pathway and can give you directions.

Mine asked me about my eating habits - this was to determine the best type of op. remember to ask if you are bypass about the length of the bypass, ask about the vits long term, duration of stay, open or key-hole, post-op follow ups, failure and success rates. IF this is not the pre-op appointment then you won't have to do starved bloods, so you won't need to take anything with you. Just remember to listen carefully to what he is asking you - which will be your health, family health, eating ahbits, associated disorders etc...

That may not be of any use to you but I just wnated to reply so you didn't think you were being ignored!

You are right about the hospitals though, they all work so differently...but most run along a similar vein.

I'm taking it that they will have my records from my GP?
I have had a lot of test recently, including upper scope, a glucose tolerance test and so on...I guess it won't hurt to take the paperwork with me to give the doc of the outcomes.

The GP gave me a copy of the referral he sent to the surgeon and it lists all the things he felt relevant health wise...there was a bit on there though with a code to what I assume as access to my records?...I wonder!

When I had my one to one the surgeon asked about my eating habits (ate alot),did I have sleep anea (no) was I diebetic (no) which op was I looking into having (band). He said the band should work for me so said he was willing to do it.
There are many questions for you to ask, are they going to agree to op,how long before you get your op,open/keyhole,how long under aneasthetic,how long in hospital are just a few.
Take a list of all your medications as they don't always have them in their records.

Sorry i wasn't very clear, i have to wait four months so as to give me chance to decide for definite that i want to have the surgery. I wasn't asked about eating habits, not sure if others were at WM but i knew what operation i wanted and the reasons why i wanted it.

Yes it does sound like the meeting I had...we were given a form to fill in at the end of the meeting to hand in saying if we were still interested after all that we had been told.

I bet you get asked questions about eating habits and so on at the next appointment you have.

I had to take a print out of all my previous illness and treatments including all previous operations from my GP to my pre-op appointment.

One thing that my GP did though that seemed to speed things up a hell of alot was to make sure that I had all my pre-op checks done at my local hospital, so when I went for my intitial appointment I had already had the Sleep Apnia, all bloods and pretty much everything else they needed. In fact the only thing they did pre-op was the breathing test for the anaethetist.

With this new cooling off period they seem to introducing that might be a good time for pre-oppers to maybe do the same and save time later on.

I asked Mr Khan, He said he had lost three but all of them had other problems besides the surgery.
