What Did U Say To Convince Your Consultant?

I had to convince my GP that my need for a Bypass was that I knew it was not a magic wand solution and that I had no other (psychological) issues for wanting one....He said I would have to convince the surgeon too.
:copon:
My GP knows me and knows of my struggle so will it be harder to
convince my consultant surgeon?
:copon:
What should we expect when we first meet our consultant surgeons?
:copon:
What did you say to your consultant to convince him or her why you thought you should have your Bypass?
:copon:

xx

I did not need to convince him. He first said he wanted to try me on a 300 calorie a day diet, I explained that that would be no good to me as once I was not under his care the weight would increase and he immediately said I was a good candidate for surgery but he could not decide if bypass or band was the better option. At that stage I was wanting the band but leaning towards the bypass, once the consultant referred me to the surgeon he asked me what I wanted and I said the bypass, he then agreed it was the best choice for me. Although at the time I felt I struggled to get what I wanted I look back and think I had it very easy really....good luck chick but dont go with the mind set that you have to convince him, just tell him how being over weight makes you feel and the benefits you will have if you have surgery....I was given a new lease of life. If you knew me six months ago you would not think I was the same person at all...xx

just be honest with your eating habbits and they will appreciate your honety as alot of wrong ops has been given out due to ppl telling fibs about there true eating habbits, tell them the truth how it is so they can give you the right op for you personally based on your eating habbits x

Thank you Charliegirl.

Your info was good to know.

I am worried about that initial appointment...(could be months away yet)...My GP did say that if I thought the discussion was difficult with him it might be worse with the consultant/surgeon...So now I feel like I might have a fight on my hands...I hope not.

I guess everyone has a different experience depending on who they get too.

Was yours NHS?...Would that have a baring on it?

I agree with Liz, be honest, as if you try to decieve your doctor, you are only trying to decieve yourself.

Remember your consultant is someone who deals with and specialises in obesity on a daily basis. he wont need convincing he will just want to know how your weight really effects you. When i went to see the consultant i hadnt even concidered surgery it was he who told me that i needed it. If i were you i wouldent reherse anything just go and see him and tell him as it is.

Hi yes mine was NHS. Dont be worrying before hand though....research your consultant and get advise off others on here who had the same one, its a good way of getting a feel for him/her. To be honest I have not read anything negative about any consultant or surgeon on here. I read everything I could and spent hours trawling the internet....any questions just ask away..xx

Thank you Charliegirl...That's exactly what I mean...I think you know where I'm coming from.:)

I am not after trying to dupe any doctor into getting what I what...I do hope that no-one thinks that of me.

My my own sake I would be very honest...the reason I asked in the first place is because my GP has given me the impression that I might have to convince a surgeon...this is probably my GP's first referral too.

I have read loads on here and other places about Bands and Bypasses...my reason for the Bypass is that for my eating habits and my conditions I believe I need and want the Bypass.

I have no idea yet who I will see in my PCT of Lewisham, London...I am not sure how to find that out yet.

I just want as much information as I can...And I am curious to know how it was for everyone here.

Thanks Again

I would never do that...I would not put myself through that sort of sacrifice...
I want a better life, a healthier life and one where I don't end up where I started...Why would people tell fibs about their eating habits?

Ummmmm!!!! I just thought of a new game board...Back Where You Started... Dragons den here I come.......lol.

hi snow, unfortunatley people do tell fibs about there eating habbits as they feel embarrased, its just one of those things that can and does happen sometimes, great idea for a board game tho, similar to snakes and ladders lol

hi Hun ... your in lewisham = NICE Guidelines criteria this means they have no huge rules about what you need to be wrong with you in order to get funding ... as long as your GP thinks you need help and surgeon thinks you need surgery ...

then they will apply for your funding and there should not be an issue ..

im Greenwich pct .. right next to you and i got mine in 3 weeks with the same NICE Guidelines criteria and i had no huge medical issues...

but got my funding straight away ...

be honest to them and they will tell you whats best for you ..

as long as you have tried everything in the book to loose they will offer ... if they think you have a problem with food binge eating etc they will send you for mental health before they offer you surgery.

and this can take sometime.. so think about if your and emotional eater or a binge eater.. if your moods make you eat.. if not tell them your emotions have nothing to do with eating and binge eating.. cause this is one thing that will make you wait for surgery..

cause i almost got sent to see mental health even tho i don't have these issues but cause it was not asked of me they where just going to send me and i said no i don't have an issue ... it was 7 month waiting for mental health in my case .....

im going with whittington hospital in north London my op is in 6 days and im having gastric bypass.. only took me 5 months to get here ..

good luck Hun xx

I never met my surgery until the morning of my operation When she came to me to sign the paper work

I just asked my Dr and he said ok as I had tried other options and they didnt work

If you have medical condition complicated (high blood pressure, diabetes) by being over weight that can go in your favour.

I agree with Brett about the binge eating.

I don't binge eat as such.......Just eat too much and get hungry quickly...I always seem to have to replenish my energy levels all the time...however those energy levels plunge very quickly...I eat far too much sweet foods and crave them and carbs all the time...Atkins diets did not work for me.
