I have read loads of articles promoting them as you can use them in so many ways and the body uses the protein quickly especially after bypass. My consultant said not to bother but I am wondering if anyone uses them or whether people feel they are wasted calories ?

Both my consultant and dietician advised to avoid them and to get your protein from natural sources. The whole aim post surgery is to eat a normal nutritionally balanced diet. Protein first, then fruit/veg then carbs. Glugging protein shakes just to up your intake or to replace a meal is not normal :)

Same here dietician says there should be no need. I do however use them now and again, normally for a protein boost after doing exercise, never as a meal replacement.

yeh that's what I would do add them to things etc but someone also said soy milk has good source of protein so don't know whether like paula says seek natural food sources x

Most taste like ass :D I do get most of my protein from food, but I have protein shakes on hand as well - they're useful as a snack or if I need a quick breakfast or for cool shakes in this weather! I treat them more like a treat drink, or use them to bake a little healthier rather than as a meal.

I've never had a protein shake or bar and my team don't mention them!

I was told to get my protein etc through diet alone not shakes. She told me those days should be gone for using bars and shakes.

I'm from Italy and post op guidelines here are a bit different. Mine require a 600 cals daily intake with 60g. proteins so I really need to supplement proteins with a shake. I have it for breakfast.
Bars are too calorific so I only have one as a replacement meal if I'm not able to get a proper meal for some reason.

I am using low sugar shakes at the moment and protein powder. But I am still on the liquid phase after my revision surgery and my dietician wants me getting in 100g of protein a day, its impossible to do on liquid without the shakes and powder.

As soon as I am able to eat a normal diet I'm going to concentrate on getting the bulk of my protein from food and having the odd shake, as I actually enjoy the taste of the one I am using and its low calorie.

100g? I hardly can get 60g. in! Does that mean you have no calorie limit?

No I have no calorie limit, just a 100g protein goal. To be honest the most I've managed to get in is about 85g a day so far but I'm trying my best! With the shakes and the protein added to soups etc I'm managing to get 85g in while consuming 700-800 calories.

They would actually prefer to see me eating more calories though, I was told to try adding in a smoothie. But no room for anything else at this stage.

I have a nutritionist app made for July 23 and hope to hear that I can add some cals. I'm 10 weeks post op and getting fairly hungry more often now.
