What foods are you supposed to avoid all together then?? The hospital wasnt very clear to me to what I was allowed and not allowed. I havent seen a dietician or nothing. Can anyone help me on this one?? All I been told is liquids for 3-6 weeks then puried foods for 3-6 weeks then solids

are u band or bypass?

My hospital gave me a leaflet about diet. I also saw a dietician. I had to have Fortimel - protein suppliment and soups/liquids only for 4 weeks. No alchohol for 12 months. After 4 weeks sloppy food like mash with gravy, after 8 weeks more lumpy food, until eventually small portions of most food. Avoid at all costs sugar - it can make you poorly. All providers give differing advice, and this is what mine told me. If you are unsure, I would strongly recommend you contact your hospital to check what they advise. It is important to do what they say, and not what we suggest because this is only a support group and we can only speak from our own experience and not from a professional perspective. Hope that's of help to you. Best wishes. Also if you look at the threads above, there are food ideas for each stage post bypass. x x x

Im a bander but have been warned off the booze too....its not band but suggested that I dont drink

As Ladybird_gal said always check with your team when in doubt, if you feel they have been vague please call and ask for more information.

I can only offer you my own personal experience as to what I was told hope it helps.

First 2 weeks liquids only, then 2-4 weeks puree, 1-2 weeks soft food and start adding regular foods one by one leaving very dense/stodgy items to the last (white bread, very dry meat, red meat). By week 8 post-op I was eating a normal diet. My instructions said that I should be able to manage most foods by 3-4 months and I could.

As for foods to avoid:

Anything with high sugar (more than 5g per 100g) such as sweets, chocolates & pastry.
Anything with high fat (more than 5g per 100g) such as fried foods & crisps
Carbonated beverages (can leave them to go flat and then drink them).

I was not advised to avoid alcohol, only warned of the increased sensitivity that I could expect. However, it is common for docs to ask that you stay away from it for up to 12 months due to the high calories, increased sensitivity & dehydrating properties of alcohol.

HTH,
Nic;)

Hi Racheal.

I still can't believe that your funding didn't include any dietary advice. I would stick to what they gave us at Walsall as it seems to be the centre of excellence for this kind of surgery and seems to work.

Leave the pureed food alone for a couple of weeks and try again, don't try and force anything into your pouch if its not ready because it will get sore.

How much weight have you lost so far?
