Which pre-op tests did you have?

yorkiegal

Baxter's mum
I'm just being nosy and wondered if we all have the same tests and whether there is a difference between nhs and private as to what you have.

I'm an nhs patient and so far I've had the following:

General blood test - 7 vials of blood ouch.

24hr urine sample in a huge container, i think for corticosteroids?

Dextamethasone Suppression Test: take some pills and have blood taken the next morning to check for cortisal levels.

Glucose Tolerance test: drink some lucozade then have bloods taken every 30 mins for 3 hrs.

Sleep Apnoea Test: wear a device on the finger overnight to monitor blood oxygen levels.

Endoscopy: camera down the throat to check stomach and take biopsy.

I'm also due to have an exercise test and then I think I'm done.
I've seen the specialist nurse twice and the dietician once. I've been placed under the care of a surgeon but haven't met him yet and they don't apply for funding until I've had all these tests.

Hi there , apart from the bloods, all the tests above I had when I was being tested for cushing syndrome, not for pre op diet:confused:

Sleep Apnoea Test: wear a device on the finger overnight to monitor blood oxygen levels.

Endoscopy: camera down the throat to check stomach and take biopsy.

Never had sleep apnoea or endoscopy

Exercise test ??

Didnt see no specialist nurse , but did see bariatric dietician

Blood tests, ecg, sleep test but the full works not the simple at home type (due to my history they checked other stuff as well as sleep apneoa and dont do home based ones as far as I know). Think thats it.
Everyone will have different tests depending on where they go and their own personal medical history.

Not sure what the exercise test involves but they told me to wear loose fitting clothes. I would imagine it's to see how out of breath I get.
I think the nurse has referred me for most of these tests to see if I have any comorbidities, as I'm just under the required bmi for automatic funding.
So far it's only shown up a mild hernia and gastritis in addition to my already high cholesterol.

Blimey!
I am a private bypass patient, and can give you a quick run down of what happened.
26th June met with owner of Weight loss surgery group, she has lost about 12 stone with band then bypass and she ran through just about every question i had.
Spoke with bariatric nurse on telephone almost daily with my worries and queries.
1st July and paid my deposit got my date of 20th July for op
10th July started liver shrinking diet
13th July met Roger Ackroyd (surgeon) had blood tests and MRSA swabs (i also asked for an ECG as i read about a 29 year old lady who died during surgery after an undetected heart condition, otherwise i wouldnt have had one)
14 July op brought forward one day due to over booking
15th July blood bank blood test
19th July Bypass day

Am not sure why they make you jump through so many hoops, I couldnt afford the bypass so borrowed the money, and the funding is such a lottery, so i took the plunge.

Wow that sounds so much easier. I suppose all the tests are a good thing though. Even if I never get my bypass, at least I know I'm generally healthy. It's like having a free M.O.T.

I’ve had so far, general blood tests, Endoscopy, and Esophageal manometry study ( Esophageal manometry is a procedure for determining how well the muscle of the esophagus works by measuring pressures (manometry) generated by the esophageal muscles.)

im presuming id have bloods. and a ecg?... i dont think i have sleep aponia x
