Proudly maintaining
I've become very complacent about my iron since my surgery. For the first 7 months I took it religiously, but was then advised to stop as my levels were actually too high. While I was pregnant they dropped again and I was back on the syrup for a month or 2 to get back into the normal range. Since then I haven't taken any iron supplements other than the small amount that is in forceval.
About 5 months ago my periods stopped. We had lots of panicking about the possibility of pregnancy, but 2 home tests were negative so I put it out of my mind.
By the time I was 2 months late I went to see my GP, who wanted to see me anyway following some routine bloods from one if my consultants clinics. They did another pregnancy test which was negative.
He told me my iron levels were the lowest they had ever been, low enough to actually shut down my menstrual cycle completely. I immediately started the iron syrup on a high dose and was sent away for a month.
Just before the month was up my periods started again, and another blood test showed my iron levels are at the bottom end of the normal scale. I have to carry on the syrup on a normal dose for a further 2 months then be re-tested.
The whole event gave me a big kick up the jacksy as far as complacency and post-op meds goes. I'm fortunate in that my family is complete, as who knows how this kind if thing could affect my fertility. I know that many women here are hoping to conceive post op, so hopefully this can serve as a warning to all. I had no idea that anaemia could do that to a woman.
So all the post oppers out there, get your syrup swallowed, no matter how yuck it tastes!
