Why didnt gastric banding work for Anne Diamond

I was thinking about this the other night. I know its a risky procedure but its not about losing weight for me more about maintenance afterwards...I find it impossible to know when to stop eating I never seem to feel full.

If I had a gastric band introduced after reaching my target I wondered if this would stop me overeating.

But

Why didnt it work for Anne Diamond...she didnt lose weight depsite having surgery

and

Would a surgeon be prepared to operate on a lady who was size 10 just to stop her from overeating?

Gastric bypass surgery usually isn't redone — unless there is a medical complication resulting from the procedure. If you regain the weight that you initially lost after gastric bypass surgery, you typically have to lose the weight the old-fashioned way — by reducing your calorie intake and increasing your physical activity.
The goal of gastric bypass surgery is to promote significant and lasting weight loss in severely overweight individuals who have been unable to achieve or maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise. However, gastric bypass is not a miracle procedure. It doesn't guarantee that you'll lose all of your excess weight or that you'll keep it off long term. The success of this surgery depends in big part on your commitment to follow a healthy diet and a regular exercise program after gastric bypass.

Hi jfc,

It seems even with gastric banding that you still can gain weight!!!

I know I would rather have the choice of going back on Sole Source and later using the milkshakes along with food to control my weight.

Maybe a brain transplant would come in handy as well:eek:

I expect there will be a time when we can all safely take a little pill that will allow our bodies to excrete the excess fat rather than store it on our bodies....just hope its in my lifetime....

If a surgeon preformed this op on a size 10 human being - he should be up for malpratice and imprisoned...truly that would go against the whole ethics of being a doctor.

You can still gain weight with the lap band - maybe liquid for a few weeks - but creamy soups etc can pass down nice and easy

The fatality rate is one in 200...thats alot. and thats only the deaths...alot of complications can arise and do arise from this op. Personally i am against it.

I know someone who had gastric bypass (or it might have been the lap band, not 100% sure  ) They dropped 2 stone in two weeks then started liquidising kebabs and chocolate, etc :(

It does not make sense to me to have a gastric bypass and then go on what is effectively a vlcd; when we know vlcd's work safely when followed correctly and you can avoid surgery.

This person tried VLCD and couldn't stick to it, despite fantastic results. He's not dealt with the emotional reasons behind his eating so keeps sabotaging himself :(

Hi DQ,

Of course emotional problems are also part of the problem and they do have to be worked trough and laid to rest as it is very difficult to move on dragging them behind like a 'ball and chain'...

People do suffer from real hurt and it seeks an outlet...

I always think emotional pain can manifest in so many ways...

Well, I was shocked myself to see how easy I could fall back into my old ways...it still felt so comfortable to do so, like an old pair of slippers.

Me too :( I go from times when I think I've sussed it, to times when I think I'm never going to be 'cured'.

There's so much to it than finding the perfect diet, even when you get to target.

I suppose some people can just lose the weight and become a slim person again. Me...I'm a fat person in a slim body.

very well put, thats exactly how I feel...except I havent reached that slim stage yet (I did last year...and at the beginning became almost skeletal through fear of over eating...then I started eating and I couldnt stop!)

I so wish someone would take me in hand when I get the binge urges...Like when I was younger and my mum would make all my food (I was 7 stone 10 until I left home)...but I cant afford to hire a chef that locks me out of the kitchen or pay for someone to guard the vending machine at work....so ive got to do it myself

But it means...I will always be arguing internaly with my chatterbox who keeps insisting its ok to be 3-4 stone overweight at my age...and looking slim will age me...! When I am in the fat bingeing going up the hill stage my chatterbox and me are best mates...when I am on the losing weight stage we hate each other....the Bl**dy cow!..lol:D

my tuppence worth!

Well, I can speak about this with great ease, as I have a gastric band!

I had it fitted in August last year, and lost 4 stone quite quickly, but my weight loss stopped, as lovely things like crisps, chocolate and ice cream slip through the band like a dream! I can't eat a whole chicken fillet, but I can eat a family size bar of Galaxy chocolate! Thats why I am now on the Cambridge Diet!

So, although it controls portion size of healthy foods, it won't control portions of choccie etc! I wouldn't change it for the world, but it is not a solution, the band is a tool to weight loss.

I am hoping once I lose my last weight with Cambridge that the band will continue to help with portion control, but I know I will have to continue to watch what I eat for the rest of my life, as I am a food-aholic, and that is never gonna change. I think about food 24-7, and CD has given me the chance to take a step back from food to get my brain in gear...

Hope this helps?

Gastric Band!

Hi Linz,

The way you talk about your surgery is more or less the way I used the tight waist on my jeans to control me, that was until I discovered stretchy pants with unlimited waist room and as husband says they really became my down fall.

I still find it hard to wear jeans all the time as I love the freedom of my stretch pants...:( :( :(

Chocolate and carbs...are my drug of choice.

Pierce has a giant bar of fruit and nut in the fridge and it has been there for nearly a day at this stage and every time I go to the fridge to get something out of it, it is there calling my name...

I know if I went near it, one square would not be enough...

As for portion control...that was out of control big time, bu I was not really aware of it, or my denial was such...

Weight watchers really did teach me about portion control and I could not believe how far off the mark I had wandered as regards what is a normal portion size...

Now as a family we are all very aware and my son and my husband are back at a normal weight for them by just adjusting the portion size...I don't cook for twenty anymore and due to the excess weight I put on, I really do need a vlcd to shift it, otherwise it will take about ten years at the rate I lose.

It is great to have someone with first hand experience of having this procedure done, so if anyone wants to know more about your experience, perhaps you will contribute more on this interesting subject, if you care too.

I know I have a problem with portion control because when I se adverts or TV programmes where families are eating a meal I can't believe that would be enough

Portion control will be something I will have to work on and after coming off ssing I will have to make sure I don't go large to start and stretch my tummy capacity again :(

Hi Chicken,

I am just after dinner and we had spaghetti bolognese, a speciality of Pierce, no less!

He is now very much into portion control...being a man he sticks with what he says...no if's or but's:(

He measured out a portion size each of spaghetti and I felt looking at it before he dished it up, I could eat that:eek: ALL OF IT:(

I even surprised myself I was full and could not if I wanted too eat anymore...

So something is happening with me...I think my stomach must be shrinking...

It has been years since I experienced that full feeling and in the last week I have felt it after meals on and off...still early days yet, but would love to think that a light bulb would go off in my head for always and say YOU ARE NOW FULL AND YOU DO NOT OR WANT ANYMORE FOOD!!!

Listening to that full signal is a large part of the Paul McKenna programme. The more you listen to your body, the more you will hear that :)

Well, I would second that, D_Q! I have the Paul McKenna series, and I think that his therapy is more likely to change our bad eating habit the band ever will.

I love my gastric band, but sometimes I hate it (when I can't scoff a 3 course meal with seconds like I used to). So, although the physical has changed, the mental has not, and that can be so hard sometimes to deal with.

YOU ARE NOW FULL AND YOU DO NOT OR WANT ANYMORE FOOD!!!

Sometimes I amaze myself :) I've always thought my brain was wired up wrong. The 'full' button was missing. I never felt full, I rarely felt 100% satisfied. There was always room for more, and sometimes the more I ate the hungrier I felt....even tummy rumbling hunger which would go off if I could control it for a couple of hours, which was very rare!.

These days, if I binge I get the full feeling very much quicker. I can feel uncomfortable. I never felt uncomfortable after a binge. Can't always say it stops a binge...but anyway binges are so occassional now.

When I eat a meal I finish feeling nothing really. I don't think I feel full..nor hungry..just normal. No particular desire to eat anything else, but I have room if I want.

I rarely even think about it any more. It's been like this on and off for a few months now and just gets better every week.

I started off being very controlled about everything...but my brain is now beginning to reprogramme. It really does feel like a miracle.

I'm not completely there yet....I've stepped off the road and I'm balancing on the curb....sometimes wobbling there, but I will make it to the pavement as the months go by.

Too many years of doing it wrong, I can't expect it to be an overnight cure, but for once in my life I see hope. I really thought it would be a struggle forever, but now I know that as long as I keep my eye on the ball, I'll have a good chance of hitting it each time :)

I too can speak from experience as i had a gastric band fitted 6 years ago. I was 19 st 7lbs at the time and after i found the right level of adjustment lost 8.5 stone over the next 12 months. However about 9 months of that was eating only chocolate - as like linz found that galaxy goes down a treat.

I found exactly the same problem - its may physically restrain you and therefore you lose weight but it doesn't adjust your mental outlook - you are always eating as much as you possibly can. Hence when i had fluid removed (because when i got nice and slim all of a sudden the discomfort every time i ate, the throwing up and not being able to go out to eat etc became unbearable) i went back to the same way of eating i did before!

Here i am all these years later and have realised i need to change the way i look at food which i am making some inroads to doing. For me - having a band sybolised how i look at problems in my life - i want a quick fix and someone else to sort it out for me. Has taken a long time to understand i really have to deal with any problems myself - but at long last i am finally coming out the other side - i CAN see the end of the tunnel!

Fantastic post Hels!!! It really sums up what weight loss is all about. It's not just the physical process of shedding it (most people can manage that to some extend or another) but also tackling the real battle that takes place in our heads .... the when, why and what of the eating process.
