why the different pre op diets?

candie

fabby not flabby :)
I totally understand the reason for the liver shrinking pre op diet, and am fully committed to doing my soup, and cordial thing(hate jelly):(
What I can't get my head around is that some peeps can have a 1000 cal a day pre op diet and still lose the same amount of weight. whereas I must only be on 200 cals a day max and feel very weak and dizzy, and can't drive already:(
Just wondering what other post op peeps think about it, and if there's any reason , or is it just the surgeons preference?

:cry:Right there with you, darling!

I have no idea why we are on the barely any cals (I'd be surprised if it's even 200, we're sieving out the lumps in the slim-a-soup) when some can be on 1000.

I am sure we will have teeny tiny livers though!

Keep at it, girl!

Some of its got to do with diabetics, they can't do the harsh one for obvious reasons. Also some surgeons aren't too bothered if your having open surgery as its not quite as important as it is if you are having a laporoscopy.

Having said that my niece was told just to lose a stone where as I was told to try and stick to the milk diet. Different surgeons and hospitals, I was open, she wasn't. But her surgeon did say they found it difficult because her liver was too large.

hi ladies, as bonita says i think it appears to be down to the surgeons own preferences. you are lucky, ;) , only having one weeks soup and jelly with your first week being 800 cals (even though that is still awful!) mr brough was strict and wanted 14 days soup and jelly only! :cry:hope your both ok? x

I think it maybe depends on your size

I was on the 1000 cals a day pre op diet and to be honest I didn't really stick to it, because my op was booked last minute I thought.....I might as well have the foods I probably wont be able to eat again so I had Chinese, KFC, burgers & chips etc but just had smaller portions

I had burger & chips for lunch and a curry chip for dinner the day before my op!!!

I still managed to loose about 5lb so I was happy enough even tho THG weren't really bothered by what I had lost

That doesn't sound right to me. Please question it as I'm pretty sure that your not supposed to be on the milk and oxo diet for any longer than 14 days.

I ended up on it for a month but that was down to a clerical error. I'm pretty sure that your aneathetist will wont want you on it that long because of the vitamins and minerals your body will be losing, you won't be fit for surgery surely.

Also there is a danger that because the fat will be breaking down in your body, there could be problems with your wound breaking down which is what they think happened to me. Please check it.

Hi
I also noted not only the difference in diets but also timescales. I'm one of the more fortunate who ten days out has to stick to a low fat low carb diet but no portion size specified just told to be sensible. Think it is down to surgeon but i wondered if it makes a difference whether you are going private or NHS. The reason i say that is when i went down the NHS route a few years ago i remember having to do the liquid only, meet certain goals before i moved onto the next tick on the list. As i'm going private now all ive been asked to do is pre op diet and to stop smoking xx

i already have .. they said normally it would be 3 weeks but theres no appoitments before the 4 weeks mark so they want me to carry on untill then & then i have a small break and then again for another 2 weeks to shrink my liver. it is really harsh and i hate it... i really really hate milk now! i wouldnt even mind doing the diet but ive not even lost that much 13 lbs on 3 weeks - i done that in just over a week on slimming world. only 2.2 lbs left and 8 days to do it... lol xx

You poor thing, Kirsty! That's awful! Well done for sticking at it.

Hmmmm - this is the one they tried to get me on an I was having none of it. I am pretty confident my liver is not enlarged, I don't smoke or drink and don't eat red meat or high sugar/fat food (carbs being my downfall). So when challenged, they agreed that salads / light soups is fine. Being too lightheaded to drive is just not an option, we all have busy lives and have to work etc.

Having a medical background I was able to fight my corner quite well and given that they do not measure the liver prior to the op....but I *do* understand for those with a very high BMI and the risks involved, they would want to reduce any risk possible.

I totally feel for you and wish you all the best in it (you poor thing) :jelous::jelous::jelous:

My surgeon (Mr Ameet Patel) who has a wonderful (and well deserved) reputation does not ask anyone to do any kind of pre-op diet and he's a liver specialist. The reason he gave me for that is that he prefers his patients to be as nutritionally healthy as possible going into the op. and I wasn't going to argue with that!! Having said that though, he's far stricter than most about what you can eat post op. - it was 6 weeks I think before I was fully on "normal" food, and I'm amazed when I read of people having "real food" (albeit sloppy) whilst still in hospital - all I got was water and juice until the last day when this girl came in with a menu and asked what I'd like for lunch. I said "tomato soup please" and then she said "and for your main?" and I said "tomato soup" - and yes, you've guessed it, we went through the same thing for dessert before the penny dropped!! But boy was that tomato soup good!! As regards anything else, Mr P doesn't give you a list or anything, he just says you can have anything that would go up a straw (but you don't need to use a straw!).

Anyway after all my whinging about my pre op diet, I was buzzing to find out I had lost 2 stone on it:D:Dso a good head start on my long weight loss journey;)
