Wish me Luck - Off to Occ Health Tomorrow

Hi all, Im due to have an interview with our Occupational Health Team tomorrow. I have got an over zealous Manager who has insisted that I attend this before I return to work.

I havent been up front with my Manager as they are not supportive in any way and hasnt got a clue what confidential means (I know this from experience as someone else in the company has had a sleeve op and The Manager has not supported them at all just slagged them off for loss of time off work). So decided that I wouldnt be telling anyone apart from 2 very close friends about the real reason for my op.

So even though my GP has provided me with a sick note stating that I have had a hospital procedure I have still got to attend this meeting.

This is the first time I have had any sick time off work in the past 3 years.

I shouldnt be nervous but I am. Probably wont get much sleep tonight.

Your boss sounds like they are under a lot of pressure and can't really cope very well without trusted staff around.

You have NOTHING to feel guilty about. Occupational health is just making sure you are fit enough to get back to work, seeing if the employer needs to put anything in place to protect you (and cover their own backs)

Sleep well x

Good Luck, sweetie ... it is only a formality to cover their backs. You are under no obligation to tell them what type of hospital procedure you have had, but if it helps, tell them you have had a hernia repair as this can strangulate so is a serious enough reason to be off work for a good while. xxx :):)

You may be able to start back on recuperative duties for a week or so until you're back in full work mode. Occie Health are the ones who will authorise this, so you go back on part-time hours but full-time pay.

Good luck - I'm sure you'll be fine.

I know where you are coming from, when I told my boss I was having an operation, the first question asked was how long would I be off. I said 4-6 weeks to cover myself. My boss has rang me every week to see how I am doing and just in to my 2nd week she asked if I had heard from Occ health. As yet I haven't but my GP has given me a note for another 4 wks, so I'm expecting a letter in the post soon.
Don't let them get to u, listen to your body and GP.
take care and sleep tight x

I had the statutory back to work interview with myomere manager which was a bit of a farce but allowed me to raise the possible complications of dumping etc plus the need to constantly drink, with the inevitable pot stops that may not conveniently fit with lesson swaps & the possibility of feeling tired & not 100% all the time. Also the need for regular meals so lunch time duties with early or late meal breaks would be a challenge but what I'd been allocated allowed me to eat while doing the duty using the breaks just for non contact time rather than eating & using any untimetabled lessons to rest which satisfied us all. I am due a review after half term so I can at least update them after this weeks appointment but so far other than a couple of days where I've had bad shakes as my blood sugar dropped its working fine.

My manager was fab. She's just concerned as her friend had same op so she knows how drastic it is. I was hoping for 2 wks off following bypass. I work from 12-9 managing a busy team of 13 people in an office. Am I being optimistic?
xx
hell yeah!! lol good luck with that! But you never know, if you can just sit there you may be ok, good luck :) xxx

Eeek. The last thing I can do is sit around..
I've had major gastric surgery before and got straight back to work.. Saying that I did a different job.
How long would you say is more likely?
xx
well its hard to say Louise, if you've done it before you might just be one of those who heals quickly, fingers crossed, but others are off work for 6/8 weeks, sorry to worry you :(

hey honey, just a thought, but maybe you could start a thread about work type and time off?

I was lucky my 3 wks sick note ran into the school summer break which meant I had 9 wks off in the end I was ready to go back by then but had had time to get through the various stages & could cope with solids reasonably easily & much of the post op lethargy had gone. It still meant I was tired going back but not pushing myself to much. I work at a large comprehensive school as a higher level teaching assistant Maths specialist so teach as well as supporting pupils in class.

Hi all, well a quick update. Went to my appointment today and the lady I saw was lovely. She read the document out to me that my Manager had sent to her. I should have received a copy but one was not sent to me.
I was so embarrassed and humiliated when she had finished. Can you believe it my Manager had referred me to Occ Health for them to speak to me about the fact that I am seriously overweight and I have diabetes. I wouldnt mind but I have never lost time from work due to either of these issues. I ended up in tears (something I hate doing in front of others). Nothing of this had been discussed at my previous meeting with my manager 2 weeks ago. Im really not happy about this and will be contacting my Union tomorrow. I will listen to what they have to say and will then decide what my next step will be if anything. Im unsure if I want to take it any further in case there are any repercussions.
If any one has to see their Occ Health please do not be as nervous as I was because they have only been supportive towards me. Pity my Manager didnt take a page out of their book.

There is a few words that i could describe what i think of your manager....and none of them are nice.
Andy x

Thanks Andy, if you are free next week you could always accompany me back to work. LOL:8855:
Bet you I dont sleep next Tuesday nite.
:8855:
I'll gladly have a quite word in his 'shell like'

Good luck hun

xx

I think your manager needs a course on how to talk to people, definately not a people person. I am with you Andy we go on mass to have a shell like with her. Can't believe she has done that with no discussion with you first. No wonder you did not get a copy beforehand. xx
