Hi All,

Just curious, did your case (request for wls) have to go before the Multi-disciplinary team?

I've read many post and I never see it meantioned.

In a letter i got from the hospital the Whit to my doc it says that all morbid obesity cases go through the multi disciplinary team, its nothing to worry about it is just all the diff teams that work together at which ever hospital ur under for bariatric surgery.

Roch, wasn't worried I already got a yes from them, I was just curious.

As its not been mentioned in post I wondered if different hospitals have a different proceedure.

And if all cases went before the MDT and people were not aware, it would be sad to get hopes up if funding comes through, but the MDT turn them down.

I got funding then had to see MDT, they can advise if they strongly felt surgery should not go ahead.

I know my pyschologist was unsure to recommend but the ultimate say so comes from the surgeon and weather you are fit for surgery.

Hi All,

Just curious, did your case (request for wls) have to go before the Multi-disciplinary team?

The multidisciplinary team for weight loss surgery consists of:
all surgeons on the team, all dieticians, consultant anaesthetist for the bariatric surgery, consultant endocrinologists, consultant psychiatrist and psychologist on the team and any more junior staff involved.

For each patient, once all their assessments have been done, their case is discussed at a meeting of the whole team involved.

The notes and assessments for that patient are discussed. Any doubts or concerns about whether to grant surgery or not, depending on any health or psychological issues, are discussed and after fully discussing the patient and whether surgery should be done, a decision is made to do surgery or not. If the psychologist or psychiatrist, for example, is unsure the patient will not be able to cope after surgery and may have problems, further steps will be taken to ensure some sort of counselling is in place before surgery.

If surgery for another reason is not decided to go ahead, perhaps other investigations should be done if the MDT agrees at the meeting.

No patient is ever given surgery for weight loss without the whole team agreeing.

Mostly these MDT meetings are held weekly.

My case went through the MDT for my hospital who decided ".... overall it was felt that the reasons in favour of surgery were overwhelming ...." and referred me directly to the surgeon for my 1-2-1 consultation when I actually signed my consent forms

I am morbidly obese (probably super MO) with diabetes and seriously reduced mobility in a PCT that follows the NICE guidelines so bidding for funding hasn't been an issue. My sleep studies were not so bad that my breathing is an issue and my BP isn't too bad for someone of my size so there should not be any medical reasons to refuse surgery.

Based on what the surgeon said at our meeting (and what she said to my OH when she operated on him last week for something else :D) I am looking at surgery in December/January but I won't believe it until I have the letter in my hand (or better still, I am coming round from the anaesthetic and can examine my scars  )

I am getting myself into a right tizz waiting for the postman every day (and ironically, I hadn't even heard the word "funding" until I came on here - does that make me a bad person?????????)

Fingers crossed for everyone on here :cross::cross::cross:

love
