bypass v sleeve

i just want some info on why ppl chose bypass rather than sleeve and how long you were in hospital and recovery time thanks

I had a bypass and I was in hospital for 1 night, chose the bypass as I wanted the dumping to stop me snacking/over eating, the surgeon advised also this was suitable to my needs.

thanks emma louise ive recently had balloon inserted and after 6 month im getting bypass but just wanted info on both x

after 6 month getting balloon out then seeing about bypass is wat i meant x

I didn't get a choice when I had surgery. A sleeve wasn't even discussed with me but on the research I had done prior to seeing the surgeon, I was happy with my surgeons choice for me which was Gastric Bypass, as I too wanted not only restriction but the added 'side effect' of dumping if I ate the 'wrong' foods that got me to the size I was in the first place.

I'm not sure about the in's and outs of the sleeve other than many people find it very successful for them and I am sure someone will be along soon to give their reasons for their choice to have the sleeve over bypass.

As for hospital stay, I was hoping for a 2 - 3 day stay if the op had gone to plan with keyhole surgery. I was having 3 procedures done at the same time, bypass, gall bladder removed and a small hernia repair and had complications which left me having open surgery and a longer stay in hospital. It was complications with the gallbladder, not the bypass though.

my sister had the baloon then had a sleeve done she is doing really well its been just over a year since the start and she has lost 8.5st. Myself i was advised to have a bypass i was in hospital 2 nights and was back to work driving a skip lorry 2 weeks later and ive not had a single problem from day 1 its been nearly 7 months now and ive lost nearly 9st hope this helps good luck

Jed, 9st in 7 months is really good, do you do a lot of excercise? I've lost one stone in 2 months which isn't so good. 7 months down the line is the need for food returning? I've heard it does after 6 months which is worrying me cos I'll have only lost 3 stone - if I'm lucky.

Hi Loz

Did they explain why you had to have the balloon before the bypass as this is the same option they gave to me but no reasons why?

just interested and also how is it going for you?

Are you saying that you don't eat 80 grams protein per day Jed? Are your high protein shakes bought from the shop?

i use body building protien julie and as for knowing if ive had an intake of 80gms i dont have a clue i go by how i feel and what my body is telling me

I've answered this already on another thread but...I chose the sleeve because I "only" had 4st to lose and thought the bypass was a bit drastic. I was also worried about dumping and malabsorption. I'm very happy with my choice so far (4 weeks post!)

your best bet is to work it out with surgeon.... some people need the bypass if there fix is sugary sweet foods... as you always have the threat of dumping if your over eat or indulgenge on sugary foods.... go with the advice from your doc and you cannot go wrong! xx

thanks cherry ive got a while to wait as got balloon in on 22nd dec and thats in for 6 month so during that time i got to see doc and pshychologist so will be decide then hun x

I was originally for a bypass but due to recurrent helicobacter pylori infections (which can lead to ulcers) I did not want stomach sealed off where it could not be inspected by camera if need arose. After discussion with my consultant I opted for gastric sleeve and am glad I did, the weight loss has been just slightly less than bypass and I don't need b12 injections (although still take multivit/mineral) and don't dump (but that may be more due to food choices).
Recovery was similar and was advised 6 weeks off work mainly due to having pureed/soft diet and lack of opportunity to eat regularly during work hours. Almost 1 year on and eat pretty much normally now just smaller portions, very rarely feel hungry (more an empty sensation) so often end up going too long between meals which can make me feel a bit nauseous when I do eat.

I did lots of reading up as at first I liked the idea of a DS and then felt it wasn't right for me and also my surgeon dosen't do them. I looked at RNY and sleeve and felt the RNY was best for me and my life style. I talked it through with the team and they said I would do best with the RNY.
I think talking it through with your surgeon is a good idea as they can help you work out what is best for your life style x

Hi! I chose the sleeve as my BMI was 41, and I felt that I didn't need to go as far as a bypass with the re routing of the intestines, but wanted a sleeve as it doesn't need the fills etc of a band.

I know bypass is usually recommended for folk with diabetes but I have type 1, so was always still going to need some insulin post op. Even with the sleeve my dose has decreased dramatically.

I am only 4 weeks out, but so far happy with my choice. Good luck with whatever you decide Loz.

Crackers x
