Alcohol?

Okay I have been through my booklet from the Dietitian and its not even mentioned. I am almost 4 weeks post op, and have a big night out tonight. Am I best to stick to water...or is anything allowed in small amounts......I really don't know whats best ...advice please:sigh:

I think most people on here have mentioned alchohol at around 4 months, but a lot of surgeons recommend 12 months.

Some have also said about not drinking out 1st, as you don't know how your going to react to it, so best to experiment at home 1st.

I've not had a drink yet, but I'm not a big drinker anyway. Still got a bottle of vodka in the kitchen since Christmas!

For me, personally I think 4 weeks is too early. Your body is still healing and alchohol is just empty calories.

but other than the healing time isn't the band different tot he bypass? they haven't been "replumbed" like us

I personally think 4 weeks is far too soon to be drinking, you have no idea how you are going to react to alcohol its best as someone else said to try it at home 1st, alcohol affects me completely different now, I only need about 2 glasses of wine and i'm drunk plus you are in the early days still and alcohol is empty calories, its up to you but I would advise against it :)

alcohol has no different effect on banders as we havent been replumbed the only way you will feel drunk quicker is if your un sensible and drink on a empty stomach, have your food/ slops or what ever your on a hour before as long as its nothing with fizz and its only a couple and you use your common sense you will be ok, be sensible as before banding alcohol is liquid it will go through no problems, and we have no replumbing, just remember its also empty calories be careful stay sensible and you will have a great time x

Thanks guys....I'm not that bothered either way tbh..and I'm a whisky & diet coke drinker...prolly will stick with water....I think I have some cambridge water flavour somewhere may take that so I don't get bored :D

I beg to differ!!........alcohol affects me completely different now and I was also told about this in hospital while getting my band, I dont drink on an empty stomach either and i'm sensible, I know quite a few banders who are effected differently now with alcohol compared to pre-band! :)

ok you are entitled to your opinion but we aint re plumbed differently we shall agree to disagree on this one x its a myth if we believe that enough we will feel drunk quicker thro the power of thought, it will only happen thro lack of food and to much alcohol no other reason common sense says so.

My surgeon said I could drink when I felt ready, but to remember that carbonated was a no no, and the whole empty calorie thing. Last night I had half a glass of wine when out with friends, I didn't fancy much more tbh. It was fine, I was careful, and I would do it again if I was in the mood for drinking (which isn't that often lol)

I used to drink alot of wine before my Banding. I used to have 1 bottle every few weeks or if in company 2 bottles. My tastebuds have now changed and I don't like the taste anymore. I had a glass of wine 3 weeks post op and my dietician said as long as it's one or two glasses it would be ok.

Like you say we'll agree to disagree on this one!!!

We are all grown ups, i personally must say on here as i did on another post : it's empty calories and do you really wanna be drinking so soon after surgery?

Be the sober party animal in the group :) xx

I personally think that 4 weeks is a bit too soon for a drink, but that's only my opinion and you obviously don't have any replumbing issues to worry about if you are a bander. If you do have a drink just pace yourself and see how you feel.

If you were a bit further out then I would have said go for it as I'm a firm believer of having WLS to give ud the normal life we deserve, and having a drink now and then is exactly what normal people do.

I agree with Liz that as banders, you are only likely to get drunk quicker due to the low volume of food in your tummy, so eat before you go out.

Have a great night x

Hi

Cant really add much to what the others have said really, except to add my experience which is that moderate drinking has no different effect on me post band. As Liz said we have not been re plumbed and as long as its not on an empty stomach, then ......................

Whatever you decide I hope you have fun x

Go careful, don't overdo it and you should be fine, but no fizzies whatsoever at this point.

have fun xx

Well...your never gonna believe this lol.....I asked for a pint of water and ice first...big mistake.....it was too cold and i was very thirsty and gulped it down..oh boy what a sore tum I had. The pub got uber busy and i kept getting jostled and started feeling a bit freaked out so I ended up beside my sis at her DJ bit with a badge that said 'Token Sober Person' (it was her finale gig as a karaoke/dj host ). Drunk folk really irritate me..I discovered. Anyway I spoke to the bar maid and brought in my ribena light from the car and she kept it behind the bar for me.I drank for free all night and was awake and sober so could drive home (35 miles away) at the end of the night . So the evening had its pluses...I just felt a bit bored at times but hey this was my choice ! It was nice to get dressed up after weeks in joggies and i really made an effort with fake tan, nails and eyelashes :D I felt prettier than I have for a long time...this must be working.....

Its nice to get dressed up sometimes, I rarely do it now but I cant wait to feel better about myself and start making the effort again x
