On the milk diet - re-re-starting after trying unsuccessfully to stick to it for a week. This is not negativity but honesty, surely I can't be the only one who is struggling with this not eating thing. I'm not sure I can do it for four weeks....knowing that I can but having to choose not to, if I could do that i would have done it years ago and wouldn't be in this place now. If I could do that i would just go on a diet and not bother with the surgery??? :tear_drop: :tear_drop: :tear_drop: :tear_drop: :tear_drop: :tear_drop: :tear_drop: :tear_drop:

It us very hard but when you get over the first couple if days it gets easier, I didn't think I could do it, but also knowing that if I didn't I could be on the diet for upto 9 weeks until I lost the 5% was enough to keep me on the straight and narrow.
Don't forget if you don't stick to it you will NOT get your op that's must be an incentive all by itself you have come this far don't fall at the last hurdle, be strong you CAN do it xx

I know it must be really tough. I'm still pre-op so haven't done it yet but I did do the lighter life diet and remember how difficult that was for the first few days when I could only drink 3 sachets per day.
Now I had to do that with the knowledge that it would be months before I could go back to solid food, in addition to knowing that I'd failed every other diet and regained the weight again. But I stuck to it for 3 months.
For me, the weekly weigh ins and group meetings helped. You can get all that sort of support from here.
Try not to be too hard on yourself. You managed a week. It didn't kill you did it? Ok so you've lapsed but now you can get back on the wagon again.

Write out a list of the reasons why you're having this surgery. Add a list of the things which you hope are going to change once you are slimmer. The new things you will be able to do etc. Write a list of the negative things about being morbidly obese.
Pin those lists up where you can see them, or if you're reluctant to let other people see, then put them in a handy folder and look at it every time you feel hungry.

Put a big tick on your calendar for each day you stick to the diet.

A month on the milk diet should help you drop a dress size or two. Go shopping and find an item of clothing a couple of sizes smaller and hang it on your wardrobe. If you stick to your diet you'll be able to fit into it very soon!

Ask your family and friends to help you stick to it. Ask them to tell you off if they see you eating things you shouldn't.

Buy some non food treats to reward yourself with such as a posh bubble bath or some nail polish or treat yourself to a manicure somewhere.

Find the worst, fattest photo of you that you have and pin it on the kitchen cupboards.

Go online and have a nosy round the fashion websites. Look at what's for sale right now and imagine that this time next year you could be buying stuff like that and feeling great wearing it.

Keep coming back to this thread and letting us know how you are getting on each day. You can do it! 4 weeks may seem like forever but it really isn't. And frankly speaking, do you want to risk them closing you back up without doing the surgery and sending you home because your liver is too big? After all this effort to get your operation in the first place?

A diary would be good on here as it can really help to log as you go , then when you have completed this difficult stage you can see also how far you have come and just how you are so much more capable than you give yourself credit for.
Drink lots of nice icy cold water if it's sunny with you and look around the shops/online at all the gorgeous summer clothes you'll be in when you lose your excess weight...if not this year then all the summers to come for definate!

Thanks so much for your post, I was half expecting a load of shut up n stop moaning posts ;-) Really appreciate your support, as for the liver thing, is this 4 weeks not just about losing 5%? I have been told that potentially my op may not be till the end of the year, won't my liver grow back once i start eating again after the 4 week period. I am finding it all a bit confusing. Really appreciate some of your tips, Thanks xxxx

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement, I guess I have been feeling very alone in all this. It is good to know you guys are out there :) xxxx

I would have loved the milk diet but got the diabetic version instead. I only got this 8 days pre-op and even then I found it tough so everyone who gets this longer in advance has my sympathy!

The reason they want you to shrink your liver is that it is situated very close to where they create your new stomach pouch. The smaller it is, the more room the surgeon has in there. If it's too big they might decide to do open surgery rather than keyhole, and have been known to decide to close people up instead and just send them home.

Not sure about the 5% thing as I haven't been asked to lose any weight before my surgery.

I am also a diabetic and I had the milk diet, the reason they do the 4 weeks is to lose 5% but also it's for them to assess how you cope with a liquid diet. If you can't or won't stick to the diet before the op how will you manage after the op and then break the liquid and mush stages and hurt your pouch. This is a very tough test I managed to stick to it and lost 10kg I was on it for 5 weeks because they didn't have an appt for me at the 4 weeks. I then had doubts about having the op as I managed to stuck to thus diet and thought I was invincible but I was then put on the refeed diet which is 2 pints of milk and 1 meal I was ok from nov till Xmas then I started to lose control and I remembered why I was having the op,
I wish you all the best with it and know you will do well xx

You are not the only one to struggle with the milk diet. I would call anyone who didn't struggle with it either a little fibber or suffering from amnesia....

As Terri says fill up on diet fizzy drinks, coffee, tea, and if you can have sugar free jelly eat it till it comes out your ears..

Stay strong but don't beat yourself up if you slip, just remember to get back on your horse and start the journey again...

You can do this and you will do this cos let me tell you something: No amount of bread or cheese or chocolate will ever make you feel as warm and good inside as wearing a size 18 jeans makes me feel :)

Good luck my new friend, i'll see you in the skinny bird shops xx

it's hard work sticking to the milk diet.but WE can do it. keep going.xx

ive been on the milk diet 3 weeks and it does get easier but it is tough especially if like me you still have to cook for others and live near take away places. However the longer your on it for the better it gets, i even feel really sick if i try and eat something.
Keep coming on here for support im sure you'll be able to do it good luck xxx

It sounds really tough but you are in the right place to get words of encouragement to help you through this.. you can do it, stay strong and keep your eye on the prize x

I thought the milk diet was only for 10 days prior to surgery, my surgery is at srh and i have not had any info from them, i rang monday and was told they only give diet info with your pre assesment appointment have been trying ordinary diets re slimming world, what is the milk diet? is it the one with the yogurts and fruit liz told me about and can i start it now as my op is supposed to be in may? x

Hi cindy, don't do the milk diet unless you advised to, different areas have different rules, but there is nothing to stop you doing a low calorie or low carb etc if you want to
