Hi all I'm jus curious if there are any of u out there that didn't have to do tier 3. Iv been referred straight to surgeon at Walsall manor will have first appointment 4 week from today. The letter and chats with secretary lead me to believe that this is for surgery and not tier 3. Iv been working with gp for years to lose weight and tried different medication.

Is it down to the gp to decide if you need tier 3 or if you have done enough with them to go straight to surgical team think what they call tier 4?

Hi Kirsty
I didn't do a tier 3 and went straight to surgery after having an endoscopy & sleep apnea study. My first appt was in January this year and I had my surgery beginning of May. This was at Homerton hospital.

Hiya coach1968 i haven't had to have an endoscopy or sleep apnea test. What is an endoscopy lol. My letter says general surgery appointment in out patients and that I will see surgeon, bariatric nurse and physician and dietitian does this sound similar to your first appointment. Can I also ask why you didn't need to do tier 3 and what ur bmi was at referral and if u had any Co morbids.

My doctor did detailed referral stating previous weightless medication and slimming classes plus I have co- morbidity (high blood pressure which am one medication ) so did not doing the tiers x just saw dietitian , bariatric nurse and surgeon had 6 month set back as I put weight on but soon list it x they won't put your forward unless you can show you can lose some weight xx

No my letter said Bariatrics dept. an endoscopy is when you have a camera put down your throat to check for damage from acid reflux. I saw the dietician on my first appt and then saw a surgeon a few weeks later. My GP wrote in my referral letter ALL the diets I had tried over the years and that I had tried orlistat previously. My health authority didn't actually have a tier 3 provider last dec when he referred me so there was nowhere for me to go. My bmi was 46 and I had slight high blood pressure. I was really lucky as I know people that have been referred to Homerton by their GP and have received a letter from Homerton telling them they are not suitable and not even giving them an appt. Must have had an angel sitting on my shoulder. I was fine and dusted in under 5 months. Hope this helps x

Thanks very much. I can only presume my gp did the same and told the about me trying orlistat I'm seeing gp Tuesday so will ask him in more detail and try get a copy of my referral letter. Hope I'm sorted as quick as u.

My doctor refered me straight to the hospital as we don't have a tier 3 weight management programme locally.

The sent a referal letter to the hospital with all the different diets ect I had tried. It also helps that my BMI is 61. They tend not to make people with such a hight BMI do the tier 3, if they do, is not for very long.

Thanks ladies

Hi I was referred to hospital from GP after a couple of weeks received my appointment. Seen by dietician at hospital 1st visit. On 3rd tier will have to be on a programme for a year before applying for funding.

Hiya I'm booked for a sleep apnea test but it's not till October. My gp said they usually give u a little machine to take home so you don't need to stay in hospital for the test.

i had to wear a monitor on my finger for 2 nights that strapped to my wrist - at home - wasnt too intrusive :) it tells them your oxygen levels etc and they can tell if u stop breathing in your sleep and how many times

Hi xk1rstyx I didn't do tier 3 not sure why must just depend on what area your in. I've just had my sleep apnoea text done a few weeks ago they fitted it on me at my appointment and had to wear it till the next morning the little box straps around your middle then another strap around same level as your boobs then another about belly button hight and one on your finger and a tube thing that goes in your nostrils not sure on the name lol mine was programmed to active at 10pm and deactivate at 8am.

Hi, now that I made up my mind about the possibility of surgery, dong tier 3 and all that seems sooooo looong, but I am trying to keep patient. I am also interested in what is involved in tier 3 and how come others don't have todo it, besides bmi of above 50 and comorbidity.... I'm at the whitt. Good luck everyone with your journeys, please continue sharing your experiences.

not me, don't think they use tier 3 in Sunderland anymore

Hiya iv finally got some answers had a call from the specialist nurse at walsall manor today and she told me that my funding is already in place my appointments are to see if I'm healthy enough for surgery which I am and to look into my life style and support me to make changes so I'm successful after surgery. She said I haven't had to do tier 3 as there isn't one in my area so lucky me but they will set me a weight loss target. She also said process will take at least 6 months but the waiting won't b so bad as long as I know I'm getting it done and I bet all the appointments will make the time fly by. I'm booked for my sleep clinic on 28th September but that's not for the test that's jus to chat to doc then will book the test.
