Are nuts and dried fruits ok for you?

emma-louise

my new life!!
I hope this question doesn't come across a bit thick of me..lol
But are nuts, dried fruits and yogurt coated nuts/fruits healthy for you ?
As some of these type of snacks to me seemed not very good.
I wanted to know as I love going to hollland barratts, and in the past I've bought sesame sticks, fruits and nuts and yogurt coated fruits.
Nuts are good for protein I've read.. What do u think? I don't want to eat if they will be bad for me and put weight on.
Thanks

Hi ya I've been having Greek yoghurt with half a bag of a snak pack of nuts it's really nice and goes down and half a bag is about 125 cals which seems alot but I don't really eat alot anyway
By the way I'm a sleever
Good luck xx

The yoghurt coated stuff is sugar!Dried fruit is high in sugar too.I would stick with a small handfull,12 plain almonds, hazelnuts.Sunflower seeds are good but chew all very well.dont forget nuts have oils!

Thanks for replies,
It's naughty really as there are sold in health shops.
Are the nuts though a good source of protein?
I'm just needing help with snack ideas,as I struggle with apples, celery, cucumber etc ad they leave me bloated and with a stuck feeling,,,
And other ideas,,

Nuts are good but not too many,Babybel cheese, sliced ham, turkey, melba toast with lf cheese spread, yoghurt,

I agree with B&B. There are loads of other choices which are much higher in protein. Nuts don't have that high of protein content-unless you eat a LOAD of them-but if you do that-then you've got fat and calorie overload.

The best protein will be dense protein-which is really filling. This will stay in your little tum much longer.

It's quality instead of quantity these days.

:)

Thanks all,
I really knew the answer,
But wanted to double check.
I do eat slices of ham and chick and lots of cheese these days.
But do struggle with fruit like spooled and oranges now x

I wanted to add-I have struggled with my choices in the past as well.

There are times where I just 'want' something that tastes a certain way-and sometimes that is the good old salty/savoury flavour.

I have also been known to lose my mind over those ASDA good for you little packs of sliced apples. Hey-when I say I have been a compulsive eater-I mean it! Someone like me could find a way to binge on lettuce! :p

I have a rule of thumb on certain foods. I call it the "sexy food" rule.

If I eat something and I like it-that's great. :innocent0002:

If I eat something and I start thinking about it..pining for it...dreaming of it  ..wondering when I can get my hot little hands on MORE of it--well..plain old LUSTING :gimi: for food-then it goes into the "sexy food" column and must be temporarily omitted from my food plan.:ignore:

Just say NO to sexy food!! :bolt:

Nuts are great in protein and also contain lots of good fats :)

The fat found in nuts is the healthful polyunsaturated and mono-saturated kind rather than artery-clogging saturated fat and this is why nuts are considered healthy despite their high fat content. The important thing to remember is the portion size. Nuts should be eaten in small amounts of not more than a handful a day.

I'd leave the yoghurt covered stuff though, they are very high in sugar normally

I have been very very sicky since my op and have had problems keeping anything down including protein. I get the wabbles mid afternoon and my knees going shakey and I get a headache so have been having a bit of dried mango mid afternoon and a cup of mint tea with linseeds in it. It seems to stay down quite well. The linseeds are about 23g of protein per hundred grams. But you have to actually take the linseeds as well, not just the tea.

Another question...
Does anyone else struggle with fresh fruit, and some veg..like celery ???
It always makes me full uncomfortable and stuck.
And I'm 5 mths post op,it's a bit hard when I'm trying to make good healthy food choices when these things not agree x

I snack on nuts, dried fruit and seeds most days. I buy them unadulterated (naturally dried fruit with no added sugar and natural unsalted, unflavoured nuts) from our local farm shop and make up my own mix in a big airtight container. I have a small container (about the size of a pack of cards) that I carry around with me.

For fruit I stick to berries as they're better. Golden raisins are also supposed to have some super ingredient. For nuts I buy brazils, cashews, almonds and walnuts. I also have pumpkin seeds and pine kernels.

It works out much cheaper than buying them pre-mixed and you get a better combination.

Celery is stringy devils food yuck, berries are good and kiwi have the most vit c of all fruit!Yum with natural yoghurt.
