bike riding

At what weight would you recommend starting to ride a bike??
I'm 32 stone at the moment and obviously a way off being able to get back in the saddle. Just wondered what people thought and if anyone had any of their own experiences x

I would like to know peoples thoughts on that as well. I'm sure there is a weight limit on regular bikes and I'm too embarrassed to ask in a shop!

same here, i can't wait to be able to ride my bike to work. I only have to go 3 streets away but hey ho!!!lol

I just bought a bike. I went to a specialist shop. I rang them before hand and explained about my weight. They were really good and said it was not so much about the weight but getting the right size frame and making sure the tyres are fully inflated.

I have only tried it a few times. I am very wobbly and am only riding around the car park where I live but I am looking forward to venturing out to the park - when I am bit more steady.

Well done! Good for you hun x

i started at 25 stone, the key is make sure the bike is right for you and make sure the tyres are pumped up.

I now do an hour most nights and love it, the only place i feel it is in my upper legs, but i guess thats using muscles i dont normally use.

its great to get out and about, im discovering places i didnt know existed through exploring the country side.

I was around 18 stone when i first got on my bike. Pg my first time my legs were like jelly. Seems seat wasnt high enough xxx

Hi I've had brand new bike in garage for past 2 years but can't use due to my knee but hopefully next year I be dusting it off fingers crossed .got to go to manor to day take sleep apnea monitor back I hope I do not have sleep apnea ?

I also have a gorgeous bike in the shed that has never been ridden.
If you are concerned about how much weight a bike will take it usually states the max weight on the details about them in the adverts.
Have a look at the bikes listed on the websites and they give a max weight they will hold.

My hubby was almost 26 stone at Christmas when he bought a bike which was specially adapted to support his weight. He rides about 10 miles each day now and usually will do a 20 mile ride at the weekend. He has already lost 4+ stone and has only cut out his beer through the week. He is loving the riding and seeing his fitness improve almost overnight.

I would think a good bike shop would be able to help you with a bike, then its down to you to ease yourself into it until you build up your stamina.

My hubby had to buy his cycling gear from the States as he was unable to buy cycling shorts and t-shirts from the UK.

He used to worry that he got some 'fattish' comments shouted at him while he was out and about but now he just thinks to hell with them, and doesn't let it worry him.. he can see he will soon be slim and fit at the rate he is going.

Good luck, I would say go for it. :)

I was 27 stone when i got my bike, I rode it to work about 1 mile away and it stayed there until i was about 18 stone.....I then started riding regularly until i got to 14 stone but then i i had not meat and my bottom and it really hurt to sit on the saddle.
I have since taken to roller skating which is great fun xxx

Thanks everyone for your comments. Lynne i'll check out the websites and see what they say, thanks.
PG i bet you are loving the freedom the bike is giving you, i can't wait x

All good advice above. The best thing with bike riding is that it's very very low impact on the knee joints. Something which I used to suffer with but hardly do these days.

Plus, we all will have really good leg muscles with carrying all that extra weight around so we can use these great muscles to our advantage.

I was about 22 stone when I first started on the bikes and used to do about 5 miles a day.

I did 77 miles on the bike last week, just because I wanted to.

It's a dream of mine to own a beautiful classic Pashley bicycle. Hopefully when I'm down a few stone I'll make it a reality. I used to love cycling when I was younger/thinner.

Use that dream as an incentive. There's nothing to stop you in the future getting one. Be ideal to nip down to the shops and going out for a picnic on :)

I only just caught on up this thread. Determined to get a bike! A friend is selling hers, might go check it out this week. If it isn't suitable / doesn't seem sturdy enough I will go into a shop and get advice on what's best for my weight.

Great comments from everyone - thanks. And well done all of you!!

Thanks tranquil! You see I actually want to be active. I love walking and swimming. But the thought of going to a gym still makes me shiver ;-) so I'm finding other active things I can do whenever I want without having to go to a gym.

I am exactly the same. The thought of a gym brings me out in a cold sweat. I want to go swimming but have to try and get over the embarrassment of me in a cossie:D.

Try an early or late swim session usually quiet or at least those folks just wanting to do laps for themselves rather than the layer public sessions when the ignorant abound. I usually go to the 7am session swim 30 lengths until 7.40am change and go across the road for 8am at school. They do a 9pm session for those wanting a late quiet swim I expect your local pool will do something similar.
