britain's big fat bill

I had a scan after the birth of my son (retained product) and the sonohrapher asked if id ever been diagnosed which at that point I hadnt. She said she couldnt give an official diagnosis because thats not what she was checking for. I later went on to have irregular periods, miscarriage, increased hair, fast increasing weight gain, around 40kg in a year! Then no periods and no ovulation. Denied fertility treatment because of my weight, originally denied surgery (through tier 3) because I had no other health problems other than high BMI. I am so so thankful my GP appealed when she did. Honestly I doubt id still be around if I hadnt had received surgery.

I agree that performing surgery would save the NHS £billions. Other operations due to weight, meds for all kinds of ailments etc surely would cost more!

they just dont get it i have many health issues some weight related some not surely once i have the surgery and the weight related ones have gone or are better and i dont need them treating i am saving them 100's if not 1000's a year in medication someone needs to give them a good kick up the backside or a fatsuit let them live as us for a while and see what it really is like

They do! One of the doctors from embarrassing bodies did just that and zaid how difficult day to day life is with a weight problem. But for them trying that it would be purely a weight problem. Not the breathlessness, joint pain, back pain, exhaustion etc etc big people feel as well and thats just the physical side! Not evening thinking about the mental, psychological, emotional etc things too... It goes alot deeper than most people, unless they've experienced it personally, understand. I duno how much research has been done about the wellbeing of those post op vs those who cant have surgery. Perhaps they should!

How is it, that us "ordinary" people know exactly how things should be done and the so called "professionals" don't.

im pretty good on the emotional/mental side of it but its the physical side that is a right downer as you said flick constant pain etc not even being able to get comfy to relieve the pain such a roller coaster

Watching this, I wanted to cry. I wanted to cry because the footage they used of fat people gorging themselves in a humiliating way was how people perceive us. Because of the mess that the CCGs have put so many in. Because they are still pushing weight watchers type groups (the hope you'll lose weight on there so you won't qualify for surgery just then...). Because of the pain those people were in.

Because it was me, all me. Probably all of us, at one point or another.

But am I glad they did try and make it clear that it isn't just a matter of eat less and exercise more, that the problem goes far deeper.

I hated the skinny bint jumping on the examination couch shrieking "ohhhh look you can get 3 of me on here"

some of it was really badly portrayed and i as always find myself saying to people who mock overweight people with my look hey its not all about food speech it might be medical etc etc this is my bug bear though and even seeing it on tv i sit there yelling at the tv

Hi

Just reading your threads in relation to the dispatches programme and I don't want to seem ignorant but I too watched the programme and I'm just starting out on the journey and wondered how the changes are different to what others have experienced . I just assumed it was a 3 tier programme anyway but now I'm worried .

not sure i didnt have to do 3 tier and from what was on the programme those who do have to do it many cannot access it as not available widely which seems to be the issue i would ask your gp/provider what you need to do i had to do a weight loss management course but that was gp recommended not provider they was happy to place me on waiting list anyway due to bmi so definetly check

yvw and there is always someone who will help if you have queries just check the threads

i did tier 3 but their funding was coming to an end and it didnt look like it was being renewed

What area are you in robina ? Surely they have to replace it with something else x
