Bypass and Uni???

Pandora_150

Finally Post-op!
Hi all!

This might seam like a strange question, but I was wondering if anyone has had a Bypass operation while at University?

I am starting my post-grad Masters in Psychology next week and with my operation scheduled for the 2nd November I am wanting to get an idea of how much studying I will be able to do. The op falls right in the middle of the first semester and I will not be able to take 'time off' as many have been doing with full time work. I have arranged time off for my part time job and at both my volunteering positions, I am worried as Uni does not work like that.

I understand I will miss lectures in the week I am being operated on (op is on a Monday); however, as I am only in 3 times a week I am hoping to be able to attend the week after. This is because I will mostly be doing a lot of sitting around in lab sessions and lectures and the most excersise I will be getting is in my hand (stupid extensive note taking habbit!)!

I have no idea how I will be feeling after my op, and I will no doubt take it at a pace I feel comfortable with. However, I would be grateful if anyone can help. Experiances both good and bad are more than welcome - I want to have a realistic expectation of what I will be able to cope with.

I had mine 4 weeks before the start of my exam period for my Law degree.

I coped quite well and found that studying helped me recover because it took my mind off everything else. It didnt affect my performance either if anything it helped it.

But i didnt miss any lectures as we had already finished all of ours before i had my op, obviously missing any classes wont be good for you, maybe ask your tutors could they place the work online for you to do or ask a friend to tape record the lectures?

Best of luck with it :) xxx

I cant speak from experience as I had my op 5 months ago and was deffo not at Uni but for the first week, I wasnt going anywhere. Second week I ventured out for small walks and outings escorted by my Mother - third week and I was firing on all cylinders.

I would suggest that if your lectures are a distance from your accommodation, you use a minicab or get a lift and dont be surprised if your brain is a bit mushy - mine took a good 4 weeks to get back to normal. Just dont overdo it. The optimum would be if someone could video or tape the lectures for you as I really feel that you should spend the first two weeks chilling and doing things at your own pace.

Why dont you tell the teachers that you are having surgery (no need to tell them what) and ask if they could sort this for you?

I'm just about to go into my 3rd year at uni, and although i havent got my date yet am worried about the same problem.

I'll just have to hope that i get my date just before easter hols (i get 4 weeks off) or when i finish for the year in the middle of May. Otherwise i am stuffed, as i commute 1hr 30 mins to get there :/

I enroll on Thursday and I have been in touch with the admin department quite a bit about my retinal detachment operation which will take place 2 days before the start of term! - but that is mostly because I won't be able to read or access a computer for 4 weeks after that op.

However, I have only just gotten my date for my bypass and I need to get in touch with the course leader to tell them whats going on! Hopefully they will have some sort of procedure for people who have two major operations (eye and bypass) during term time!!!

And I was hoping for a quiet year!

Thanks for getting back to me about it! Its good to hear both of your experiances!

Emma Louise, I have been worried about my Bypass clashing with Uni for a long time. However, I have only just gotten my date! I have just finished my undergrad degree in Psychology and Crime, and I was worried that it would clash with that origionally. I have a 30 min commute, but I have talked to my family about it and they are willing to take/pick me up if I need them to in the weeks following the op - it is just whether I will feel up to it!
