I had my bypass a week friday and now i'm worried as i feel like i can eat too much!
for example, in one sitting i can have two ramekins of soup and two munch bunch small fromage frais before i feel any kind of resistance. Is this normal?? Also can drink a whole slimfast milkshake in around 15 mins no problem.
Am i broken???

Hun, I don't know as I'm pre-op but didn't want to read and run. I'm sure you're fine but I'm sure someone slightly more knowledgable will be along to help in a min!!!!

How was the Whit? Were you with Sufi or Heath??

xxxxxxx

First don't panic!!

Soup and fromage frais are slider foods that go almost straight in and out of your pouch, so you may very well not feel any resistance.

Also your pouch will not yet be fully healed, and it might be a while since you experienced normal feelings of being full, so it can take a while for your brain to recognise the signals your new stomach is sending.

Follow the diet sheet you were given and regulate your intake in line with the portions you were told to take. It is much too early for you to be testing your pouch to see when you feel full.

Even now six months on I rarely get feelings of being full before its too late. So i have to measure out each meal to ensure I don't over do it.

So worry not babe you will be fine. Just take it easy and follow the sheet. All is well xxx

Hi Amy
I'm 2 weeks ahead of you and still getting my head around it all. Karlos is much more experienced than me but if it helps both my surgeon and bariatric nurse said you can't over eat when on liquids alone, i thought i was eating too much in that phase but i still lost 21lbs in the two weeks so don't worry as Karlos says all is well xx

Phew! Thanks for that! Was getting worried there!

Karlos, thats the problem, my diet sheets don't mutter a single word about portion sizes! Just list foods that i may be able to tolerate. Not that helpful at all.

Meggie, i had Dr Heath and yes the Whittington is very good. Although thanks to me the next bariatric patient will have a smoother ride in the Victoria ward than i had. Basically, they didn't know that free fluids meant just that for us bypassers! I survived on water and SF squash from Friday eve after op till Monday afternoon when i saw Lucy the dietitian whom said i could have had lots of other things! Unbelieveable!!! No wonder i felt sooo weak!!! Anyway, that mistake should not be made again.

I remember reading about this. In Susan Maria Leach's book 'Before and After' she said that she was starting to worry that she could eat too much - but that was when she was still on purees, then she started on 'real' food and suddenly realised that she filled up really quickly. I think, as Karlos said, 'slider' foods just flow straight out of the pouch and don't create a feeling of fullness. Don't worry about it Amy - I'm sure a lot of people feel like this. Mxx

Glad you feel better Babe. Honestly you are fine.

They don't really worry about the amount of liquid you take in during this phase, hence no volumes stated. It would be really difficult to overeat when all you can do is drink.

Hugs xxxx

Search for "pouch maintenance", Phatgirl has put a link on to a great site which tells you all sorts of stuff re bypass, OK I'll put it on again, but must thank Phatgirl for bringing it to my attention.

this post makes very good reading, i suppose when i came home, i started purees as per instructions from my dietician, i eat as she says, 6 small meals a day, am i full?? dunno....i eat about 15 or so teaspoons....is that enough?? dunno....am i hungry...dunno....am i thirsty....dunno bar checking the colour of my pee.
I drink purposely 2 litres a day of water/juice plus i have coffee/tea as and when i want....in honesty my sensations with food have really changed, as i say, don't feel hungry at all, but eat regularly, i'm guessing it's cos my pouch is still rather swollen as Karlos has said, these are my obsevations of me so far

I was right, had an arguement with my mum about this. She was in the room when Glenda came in to discuss and she swears that she told me liquids for 2 weeks ! I was adamant that she had said pureed!

oh yeah, defo pureed stuff from the outset my dear

Time to throw a spanner in the works!!! I was told liquid for two weeks then puree for two weeks before trying semi hard foods slowly!!?!?

Amy each dietician is the same as a surgeon they advise differently. :D
Do as your dietician tells you hun, ours just said puree, we had to have some puree before we were allowed to leave hospital

Im to be fair, doing both puree and liquid. Simply because Im paranoid that I will stretch my pouch...thats if i actually have one in the first place lmao, Im still not convinced.

Im not eating loads as I dont fancy feeling sick, but Im struggling with the head hunger issues, as Im not sure Im hungry or its my eyes lol.
Also I dont get the full feeling but when I have eaten a certain amount i get the gurgling lol and that for me is my stop sign I think.:D

We will look back on this next year and laugh at how paranoid we were ! Your doing fine, just do as they say and youll be ok :)

i feel i'm lucky, i just don't feel hungry at all, ever, i eat cos i have to, not cos i'm hungry (yet)

Also I dont get the full feeling but when I have eaten a certain amount i get the gurgling lol and that for me is my stop sign I think.:D

Hello People - let me dispell a few myths here for you.;)

Post op eating - Your put onto liquids and then sloppy to allow the the joins in your intestine and the staple line across the stomach to heal properly, forcing hard foods in may pop the staples and require surgical revision, also this time allows the bruising to subside and the new pouch time to get used to its new function ! - the longer you can go on the liquid and sloppy stages the better your eating will be when you do return to normal eating, all consultants give different lenghts of time you must follow, but the general rule of thumb is that if you progress to soon and something hurts, then your not ready yet, listen to your bodies, it will tell you when its time.

Pouch stretching - This isn't something you need to worry about, your pouch is made from the top section of your stomach, which has the thickest muscle band, its been set to hold about 2oz at the moment, and in time will stretch out to hold about 6-8 oz, the pouch is made small to give your weight loss a really good kick start now and its designed and intended to stretch out with time to allow a great eating range.
To actually stretch your pouch takes some real dedicated abuse over many months if not years of over eating, bypassers that do not understand or eat to restriction are the most likely to long term stretch there pouch, some bypassers dont like the feeling you have when you reach restriction and therefore avoid it by eating softer foods that dont cause the discomfort, the softer foods allow the pouch to hold more without pain and thus stretch's it out over time. Any bypasser here on this forum that has been successful with there weight loss will understand and use restriction when they eat !

Dumping - some will dump and some wont, there's nothing you can do about it until it happens, and you need to understand and know what makes you dump, so dont worry about it, although the symptoms are very unpleasant they are not life threatening and your body will sort itself out. In my view it would be better to experiment and work out what makes you dump in the safety of your own home rather than when your out for the day or in a resturant !- but try not to worry about, like many others if you dump you will learn how to deal with it and what food types to avoid in future.

At your stages you really dont need to worry about stretching, or anything elase, just make sure you are getting fluids down and take whatever you are eating slowly, when you feel right then slowly experiement with slightly harder foods and see how that goes, if pouchy doesn't like it, then it will let you know !

One last thing - Your currently where hundreds of us have been before, at the moment it feels like a really big deal, the learning curve is 90 dgerees for you at the moment, it does get better and easier to manage, you will get your head around eating properly again and its so worth the agro and hassle when your a year out and 10 stone lighter :D
