I was set on the bypass but now im thinking if a gastric sleeve maybe the way to go,ive researched all the options but im still unsure what will be best, its something that i will have to live with for the rest of my life. Please has anyone got any advice

hi hun im not sure i can advise you but i can say im in the exact same position and its awful! hope u make ur mind up likewise i hope i do!!
:(

what has your surgeon suggested would be best for you? I would take their advice about which one would suit you more xx

Hi. This is something I am also looking into. I have only just secured my funding after a 2 year battle, but when I had my first hospital appointment in 2009 I was told that I should have the bypass. A good friend of mine is further along than me and she will get her op date in November, but at her last appointment she was told to decide between the bypass or sleeve by her next visit.

She was adamant she was having the bypass, but now after researching both she is more drawn to the sleeve. She states her reasons for this is that she does not want to take 'artificial' vitamins for the rest of her life, she wants to be able to eat and drink at the same time, the operation is shorter, she does not have type 2 diabetes or heart problems so bypass is not really her last resort and also if the sleeve does not work she could have the bypass later. She feels the bypass is final and will restrict her more socially than the sleeve.

I do think she has raised some good points and has made me think about what would be also best for me, but if anyone has any feedback it would be much appreciated. I am waiting for my appointment to go back and start the process again at the hospital so I have plenty if time to look at my options.

Thanks

It's a tuff one, I suppose it's down to the individual. For me the bypass suits me and it's done. I would hate to think I went for a sleeve then had to go back again for a bypass, in for a penny so they say. But that's just me I needed my options taking away from me and that's what the bypass has done within reason.

i was wavering before my surgery between the two, but i decided that a bypass was the right one for me, as i was more of a sweet eater than a volume eater, with the bypass it has left me no room for mistakes as i know if i have sugar then i will probably be ill, but with the sleeve i can have sweet things and not be affected...i guess you need to really think hard about what type of eater you are, and be honest with yourself, good luck with your decision x

Thank you lady's you have all really help me, I will sleep on it tonight and talk to the doc tomorrow at my camera.

I originally asked for sleeve as I was convinced it was the best. At my consult with Mr mahawar I was told that it was discussed at mdt and they said bypass is better. I was shocked! I spoke to Mr Balpuri on Tuesday at my endoscopy as on the front of my notes it still stated sleeve and he initially said that's what I would be put on list for,...........then he read my mdt notes and said sorry it would actually be a bypass. I explained that I would still prefer sleeve if possible. He said that if I was unsure he would have to refer me back to mdt and this could delay any procedure I had. I asked why mdt had decided bypass and he said that he was at mdt discussion, the decision was based on my eating history and how I eat(portion control problems). Mr B asked if I wanted his opinion...I said yes and he said a bypass would be best long term for me as I could potentially stretch the sleeve and be back where I started. I took his advice and I'm now on list for bypass :)

Hi guys, it seems that sleeve is getting a bit more popular. I was delighted when i heared about it when i went for my consult because i was contemplating the bypass but had my reservation -
1 if i got gallstones ( complication of vast weight loss) and had a stone stuck in the comon bile duct, and eeded an ERCP (scope that goes into stomach to retrieve stones from bile duct) it wouldn't be able to be performed as no access.
2.i didn't like the idea of my stomach being dormant with no access. i worried that if i ever had a problem how would it be detected?
obviously these were my consern and i'm not in anyway trying to sway your decision or say the bypass is not a good operation as it works marvelously for the majority. you have to be fully aware of both surgeries before you make the decision that is right for you!!!
one more thing, eating and drinking at the same time is very difficult with a sleeve too!
I made the best decision of my life to have my sleeve and I LOVE it!!!
good luck in your decision making and all the best in your journey

ive personal messaged you x

I dont see how any wls restricts you socially, you just adjust your eating and go out and party!Life and having fun is not all wrapped up in food, true we all like to go out to eat but its no different to before, you just have better choices and less!

I'm having Bypass, and was advised by my surgeon that was going to be my best option. When I first asked my GP about an op, I asked for bypass, but hadn't researched other options, so I read about other ops and when I met the consultant I asked for band. But he said that bypass is definately the way to go.
So, just talk it over with the surgeon and go with his advice! x

hiya, i wanted the band in first place then when i went to seminar i knew bypass was the way to go and when i met surgeon he suggested bypass rather than band as it has more affect. its the best thing i ever did. i agree pills are a pain but its nothing compared to me having a life again. you can still socialise and eat just in smaller portions.i think only you can decide on the way forward but speak to your surgeon he will know whats best way. I was also told if for any reason the bypass was not possible he would sleeve me .thankfully i got bypass. gl on your journey and hope u get sorted soon, tc xx

Did you mention this at your appointment? I'm curious as I thought we couldn't change our minds once we were on our way. I agreed to bypass as that's what the dietician advised, and I hadn't really heard of the sleeve then (Sept. 2010). Thanks hun.

No I never got to say it to the doc it was all over so quick but I told the nurse after and she said at the pre op they can change it if they think it's better. some people have been swapped at the last min. Gives me more time to think xx

... same here Jema ... sleeve hasn't been mentioned to me at all, and now wondering if I have made the right choice! God this is confusing :-( xxx

I understand how confusing it all is... but when u take time to thing through all options and link it to your own eating habits, the right decision will be made. xx

I had a sleeve on the recommendation of my surgeon. I'm really pleased with how everything went, my recovery and my weight loss. I think you need to take the advice of your surgeon.
