Changing Tastes

good question sweets......... i hear alot of people saying they cant handle chicken i hope this doesnt happen to me as its my main meat i eat interesting to see the responses xx

My tastes have not changed at all, it's just my tummy won't tolerate the things I used to like.

I love fatty meat..... sorry folks ....... still do but if I eat it I am on the toilet for a whole day, which I suppose is a good thing, but I still love fat.

Can't stand the smell of Chocolate, hate beans and eggs, love fish and strong flavours like scampi fries, which i didnt like before

Right, firstly i have to ask when you say 'goes off' do you mean they don't enjoy the flavour or they can't eat it as it rests uncomfortably with them or they just don't fancy/crave it?

I sometimes struggle with what i call 'dry' fish, a nice piece of smoked haddock or cod... this causes my pouch to 'harden' and then i don't really want to eat the rest of the day.... Eggs used to bother me but they're fine now although they fill me up for longer than say cereals would. Chinese food causes me discomfort, not sure if it's the rice but it affects my stomach and i'll suffer all night for it, Indian food is fine :)

I don't fancy chocolate very often now, very very rarely in fact whereas before my surgery i had to have at least one a day. Sometimes like buses my chocolate fix came in pairs :)

Apart from that i still enjoy food, scrub that i love food still. I enjoy dunking a little bit of naan bread into a little bit of balti or tikka masala... the emphasis is one the word LITTLE lol...

I'm also very blessed in that i don't dump so if i really really fancy something i can have a bit. My only worry now is controlling the knowledge that i can be naughty and get no repercussions. I pray every day things could change and i could start to dump to save me from myself xxx

The thought of fish and chips, chicken, meats etc, make my stomach turn now!

I used to be a T-Rex before, meat meat meat and I'd be happy!

Hi hun!! Not long now :):) I can't bear the smell of chocolate, was a chocoholic preop, can't stand eggs and ate them every day preop as we had chickens! Can't manage chicken yet, didn't enjoy it at all but I'm LOVING fish and strong flavours tho. Oh sweet stuff is off too, no more sugar in drinks etc and completely gone off tea xx

Pre-op I loved sweet things, I had to have sugar in tea and absolutely had to have at least two big sugars in coffee. Post-op I cant abide anything other than the natural sweetness of the milk in my drinks and I adore unsweetened coffee in the form of latte. I couldnt tell you if Ive gone off of chocolate and cakes etc because I dont have them, so I dont know and I wont find out because I wont be having them.
But yes, your taste buds seem more sensitive post-op, for me it is like my taste buds came alive, maybe because I actually have food in my mouth long enough to taste it these days where I used to just gator gulp it.
So I dont know if things just ARE tastier now or Im just taking time to taste them.
Steph xx

Hi Julie, just to clarify, I meant don't enjoy flavour. To me, yogurt for instance tastes sour and gritty and leaves a dry aftertaste. With having to do 4 weeks on the liquids due to postponement i am guilty of sneaking a finger end of hp sauce just to get a different flavour in my mouth. Told my dietician who has been really supportive by ringing me every few days and she laughed and said that she wouldn't be shooting me at dawn. lol :D

ive found that i cant stand strong flavours, its as though my taste buds are really sensitive now. ive never liked salt, but not, i can virtually smell it in stuff, i can no longer eat lancashire cheese, which i used to love, but now i can taste salt in it, weird i know.

oooo salt is my worst demon x

I'm expecting my tastbuds to spring to life as i've stopped smoking in the last 3 weeks to. Been a bit naughty and not given up sugar in coffee as the sweetners leave a nasty taste in my mouth as do nas juice. Have still lost 21lbs tho. I know it could have been more if i had given up sugar but i have given up so much all of once and not liking the jelly and clear soups anymore i thought i would carry on and hope i will like sweetners post op. Would rather go without coffee than have sweetners.:cry:

Only 4 weeks post op on Monday but I have deffinately had changes to my taste buds! As soon as I had a drink post op it tasted really strong and sweet! I have always had 2 sweetners in coffee but now I can only take one. Tea tastes really strong too, no sweetners. Ive not had many things but things deffinately taste stronger somehow. Time for things to change yet so Ill have to keep an eye on it :D XX

My taste bud's haven't changed up to now (I'm only 4 weeks out). But I tried a bit of rice the other night & I was ill. I literally had two tiny spoon full's but vomited & in agony, my pouch was sore afterwards.

Rice was my favourite food. But looks like I'll have to give it a miss now.
