Post-op Gastric Bypass
Hi all,

I have had my first appointment and am booked back in to see the drs 17th May where they have asked that I lose some weight. Now I'm not sure if I have so far however from tomorrow for the next 2.5 wks I'm travelling round the country living out of hotels with work. They pay for my breakfast, I have a fiver to spend on lunch and £20 for dinner!
My problem is resisting temptation. I can normally resist at home by just not buying stuff in the house then I might miss it a little but I can cope however if I'm buying on a meal by meal basis I'm scared I'm just going to end up eating luscious steaks every night with cheesecake deserts in the restaurants!!!

Hi there :) Any delays in weight loss expected of you will probably result in delays to your surgery. Are these GP appointments or bariatric appointments?

Sadly, someone on here has just had to go back to the beginning of the process because they did not lose the weight expected of them - here is the thread: http://www.wlsurgery.com/general-su...ion/152467-what-next-after-failed-pre-op.html

I know it can be hard to resist temptation but try and make healthy food choices if you can. Depending on how the steak is cooked (i.e. not in loads of butter) you could still have that with a salad? Good luck :) x x

If you want this surgery bad enough, you'll find your willpower and make good food choices. If you can start cutting down your portion sizes and eating healthier now, it will make your life alot easier post op.

I'm sure the hotels you stay in will have healthy options on their menu. It's up to you if you choose them. You'll be kicking yourself if you get your surgery put back because you couldn't commit to changing. Good luck and try your best xx

They are bariatric appointments.

Thank you for the words of wisdom :)
It doesn't feel real yet.

I am looking for any practical ideas for lunches, I have no fridge etc and don't want to be buying on the day all the time. I guess I'm looking for easy answers but ultimately I know that I've just got to pull my finger out and do this, whether it be relying on a slim fast for lunch and making sensible choices for my evening meal.

Ty girls xxxx

Have they given you any dietary guidance or just told you they expect you to lose x amount of weight before your next appointment?

Anyway, slimfast for lunch sounds like a good idea and makes life out on the road easier, and like you say try and make sensible choices for breakfast and dinner ;) x x

They've just told me to reduce my portions and to lose some weight. They've not specified an amount at all. My only worry is being famished all the time which makes you make stupid decisions. I've just got to keep thinking about the end goal!! Xxxx

Before I even thought about surgery, I lost 1.1/2 st in under 2 months. I wasnt hungry.

For breakfast, some tea / coffee, yogurt or maybe a couple of boiled eggs. Lunch - have a bowl of soup and refuse the bread roll - or try John West tuna salads (prepacked and under 250cals) - those also are long life and dont require a fridge if you are on the move.

I'd snack on carrot sticksand cherry tomatoes. I still do. They fill me up and sit like lead in my tummy. Fresh berries as a treat and an occassional banana. Go for salads etc in the evening... or chicken / fish with veg and lighter type sauces.

It can be done. If you hammer back on carbs - it makes a drastic difference very quickly. With, no bread / toast / cake and limiting potatoes, pasta, rice means you'll be practically wiping out butter, sauces and most of the fat in your diet and large amounts of sugar.

Good luck - once you've done 3 or 4 days, it's much easier and temptations are far less x

Yes, you have to keep the end goal in the forefront of your mind and keep reminding yourself why you are doing this :) It's worth it - best of luck x x x

Ty Sarah, I'd forgotten about the John west tins! Will certainly grab some of them!
Ty samsara. Will let you know how I get on xx

oh - if you are going past M&S services .....

I love the king prawns with dip (only use a fraction of the dip and 150cal). They also do some lovely packed salad and deli type stuff. Pre packed melon too.

I was back in Manchester for a checkup earlier in the month and that's what I was living on whilst in transit. Stayed over and took my own food into hotel room rather than eating out as such

Chicken with tomato sauces or fish are usually good choices when out. Avoid things that say creamy or cheese as there's likely to be added cals. Ask for things to be made without added fat, and dressing etc on the side. Salads are pretty easily available now and as long as you go for something like boots shaper/ww/healthy living you should be fine. Before my op I would have a milky coffee for breakfast, lunch would be a salad and dinner would be a small normal meal, cooked from scratch.

Is there a marks and spencer food court near you? They do awesome spanish salad that you eat cold so you could have that as your main meal. They do a good range that keeps your cal down and protein up. Then just go to the hotel for breakfast. I would of thought they would have a fresh fruit buffet and low fat yogurt option. It will be hard but only you can stop being tempted. I found i had half a bottle of water before going to the restaurant so I wasnt starving marvin when i went away with my husband last month.. It was my doctors tip and it did help. also just eat less than half of the portions. It was hard as I was taught to clear my plate! But its best to leave it. just eat what you need. Or have a low fat soup starter so no desert! If you can not resist the restaurant don't go in it. Get something like a salad you can eat in your room. It will be hard but i know a lady that put her weight back on after losing it with a bypass. I think we just have to say certain foods are no longer on our radar. My friend is losing weight again now but she is only getting ontop of her eating habits now. She wishes she had sorted her head before the op. I think it is like quiting smoking you dont go and sit in the smoking area. You would not take a recovering alcoholic to the pub. I would avoid the restaurant at dinner time if possible. If you have to go because of work ie, meetings. have your salad and fruit in the room before hand and just a light bite in the restaurant. Plus once you have been good once. it will give you a boost and will get easier. Remember No alcohol either! Thats the biggest killer not just the cals but the fact will power just flies out the window .:break_diet:

Good luck. Be strong.. You can do it.

I had the same thing last year the week before my op i was on low cal high protein and i was away on a weeks business trip, I had breakfast of bacon and eggs at the hotel, then yog for lunch with a piece of fruit and then in the evening chicken salad or similar. To fill me up I overdosed on diet coke !! I lost 8lbs in the two weeks before, I was determined to do it!!!
Good luck

One thing I have found really useful in helping me when I am out and about or away from home is by using Subway as they do salads in a pot which you pick from their range - I think it's about £3 but you can be sure you won't be far from a subway wherever you are. I have all the fresh salad, gherkins, olives, jalepino peppers and either a couple of slices of meat or just stick with the salad. It's better than buying the ready made up ones from M&S or Tesco's etc as they tend to be loaded with mayo or other dressings.

Hey guys!!!

Sooooo sorry I didn't even realise I'd got all these lovely and helpful replies!! Thank you :)

I coped lol and managed to lose a total of 5kg since my last appointment and they were happy with that! I succumbed once to the breakfast but mainly stuck to poached egg on whole meal and/ or cereal with fruit and yoghurt!

Just wanted to thank you for taking time to reply. Hope you're all doing well xxx
