Doctor Agrees......

Hi all. just this minute got back from my wonderful GP. i told him that the hospital doctor (Breathing problems) had said a gastric band might be a good idea. and bless him he seemed as if he has been waiting for me to ask this question for a long time. he has said he is behind me 100 per cent, although he himself has not had any patients on the nhs, he has a couple that have had it done privately, and one has done brilliantly and the other has lost weight.. just not that much. he is not sure of the criteria but is checking as we speak (hopefully) with my high BMI and the health problems i have (which can mostly be put down to my size ie high blood pressure, breathing difficulties, chest pains, and joint and muscle pains that have meant i had to give up work) so maybe i too can join you all on the losing side... When i went in the receptionist asked if the student could sit in, i said no. i tole the doctor the reason... if it had been heart lung or even the underneath area!! i would have felt comfortable with her being there. but my weight feels so personal and i admit i feel it is my fault, and that i have caused the problem. luckily my doc said no it isnt. and that with all my previous dieting where i lose 2 sometimes 3 stone i would probably never be able to lose it all it has become too much. i feel so pleased that this may happen, i realise it is not the easy option and that i will have to work hard at it. but i will have the help from the band, and the support from here. sorry that i have rambled on but i really do think that at last something may work. will keep you all informed with whatever happens next. i look forward to reading the rest of this site i only found you last saturday. good luck to all BridieXXX:p

Brilliant news Bridie :) am really pleased for you. Sounds like you have a good GP there, which will make the process a lot easier for you.

Well done, Bridie. I am so pleased for you. I can relate to every word you have written because I have also lost lots of weight, several times, only to pile it back on again. So my GP knew I had made serious attempts to do something about it myself.

I know that surgical intervention is not the panacea to a weight problem, but for me and I am certain, the majority of people here, it is a drastic step to take to get control of food and our issues with it and thus not a decision taken lightly.

I too am having NHS treatment and my GP also behaved as if he'd been waiting for me to broach it. I found myself just blurting it out one day and then promptly dissolving into floods of tears.

I have been a member of this site for a while, but I was LL/Cambridge back then and have only just returned following my initial visit to the hospital where I will have my procedure. The people on here are fabulous and I find them a source of great inspiration.

Welcome and the very best of luck for your journey.

Hi Bridie glad to hear your GP is being supportive I must say when I read about some peoples struggles to get help I feel extremely lucky. I spoke to my Gp who referred me to a dietician at the hospital who virtually straight away asked me if I had considered surgery when I asked if this was a option he said he would refer me to WLS department whom I saw only once and I was then on the list and if I had taken the first date they offered me which I couldnt I would have only been 6 months from first seeing my GP to getting surgery.
It is the best thing I have done I just wish I had gone my doctor before.
Good Luck with everything xx

Hi Bridie, thats great news that your GP is supporting you all the way. one big hurdle overcome. good luck with you application for funding and keep me posted x

just thought i would update, not feeling quite so happpy now, went to same gp on xmas eve for bp meds and while there i asked if had sent off application for funding. short story is yes he has but that he doesnt think i will get it as i dont have diabetes (yet) he told me he heard of someone with bmi of 100 who couldnt get the op as they were healthy (idiot drs) and someone with diabetes and bmi of 40 could get it, i felt and still feel pretty sick about it all as i now know i am going to have a FIGHT on my hands, why is life so complicated, he hasnt had a reply these were only his thoughts so i am praying he is wrong and it will all go swimingly, but i am not holding my breath. i dont really know what i should do next, i suppose wait a bit longer and get the reply from whoever he sent off to. feel p....d as he was so sure it was the best thing for me when i first saw him. oh well lets play the game. (sorry i sound a real whinger) BridieX

Hi Bridie,

I would see hpw it goes. Ask your GP again if he/she has put the letter in. Have a look on the BOSPA site to see what criteria your PCT want to agree funding. If you don't see any progress, or are knocked back, then there are some people on here who have written fabulous letters to their GP/PCT which have helped. I am sure they will help if needed.

We are all here for you. :hug99:

i visited GP again today and was told i have been denied. he was very nice (it isnt his fault!) i am not fat enough apparently, just over 21 stone and i was 23 and a half at my heaviest. the criteria he was quoted was BMI 50, but i have high blood pressure and breathing problems. he wants me to go back in april and he will try again? all sounds strange to me, anyone else try again? i have been pretty good on my diet this time and am losing weight but i have done this so many times before as gp knows, i have never been able to shift it all and then back it comes plus some.. i even thought of gaining weight to achieve the 50 target but realise that would be daft, its just that reading all the stories on here and watching sky real lives this month had really built my hopes up. feel pretty p....d off right now and am very worried i am going to head into the biscuit tin. i shall carry on with my healthy eating plan but cant help feeling as it hasnt ever worked completely for me before why should it now, hope that makes sense, i am now 47 and feel that this is really my last chance, sorry for moaning i know there are a lot of people with worse problems than me. Bridie X:sigh::sigh:

bridie I am really sorry and I don't know what to say other than if you feel you meet the criteria Having looked on BOSPA) then write them a letter. Sometime the gps don't put enough in their applications and this can often be why its rejected. As someone said there are people who have been in this situation and have written brilliant letters and got the decission overturned.

Oh Bridie Im sorry to hear your news.

As Tesmaralda says, look on the bospa site to see what the criteria is for your area. Have you been turned down by the PCT, or refused an appointment to see the consultant. Did the GP show you the referral letter he sent and the reply he has received?

If you meet the criteria then dont give up. Follow Terri's advice above and write your own letter explaining your reasons for requesting surgery.

Good luck chick. Keep fighting xxx

definately check out the criteria your PCT needs GP's have been known to get things wrong and as he is new to this maybe hes not adding in everything that would count, i should think high blood pressure and other weight related problems helped towards you being accepted for funding ect. Research whats needed and go back armed, make sure you state what you have learned and perhaps he will pick up dditional knowledge from you to put on your reapplication

Bridie, somewhere on here there is a list of co-morbidities which will help you in your application should any of them apply to you. Sorry, dont know how to find it or post links but one of the helpful peeps on here should know where to find it
