Drinking and eating

TBH I do still drink with my food - but I just take tiny sips and never have more than half a glass. If I'm out for meal it's not feasible to wait half an hour before having coffee. I often order a coffee instead of sweet, otherwise I have to sit there doing nothing except watching everyone else tucking in ! When on holiday in France I had half a small glass of wine with every meal - and had still lost 6 lbs by the end of the fortnight ! I try and follow the rule as far as possible, but at the end of the day I think the key is be sensible but stay realistic.

Thanks for this question. I'm pre op and have been practicing not drinking while eating and its hard! I love the answers you received.

another reason to not drink with your meal is if you have eaten something that absorbs fluid and expands (bread, rice, pasta etc) its going to be difficult to get rid of

Hi Sugga, you soon get used to not eating and drinking at the same time. The bit I still find difficult is drinking enough between meals but I've started carrying a bottle of water or NAS everywhere with me.

I do admit to occasionally drinking with food - I very rarely drink tea but on the odd weekend I have a few sips with my morning toast or bagel and it doesn't seem to be doing any harm but I am really aware that I need to get every bit of goodness from my lunch and evening meals so never drink with them.

Drinking before you eat can fill you up so you have no room for the food so not a good idea early out. It makes your pouch wetter too I believe, so food can slide through quicker though I'm not sure about that. If you eat and there is no where for it to go downward, it will have to come out up wards and that is never a good thing lol

Conversely drinking right up to eating is recommended by some surgeons for those who are a year or more out. They call it water loading and it can help prevent over eating as your appetite increases and you find your able to eat larger portions.

Drinking too soon after a meal (Within 30 minutes) can wash the food out of your pouch so you feel hungrier sooner. This should be avoided obviously as it can lead to snacking as your appetite comes back with a vengeance after a few months post op.

I have read it can also cause late dumping too as it washes the food into your intestine quicker than your pouch would normally empty and you might not be able to cope with the food hitting your gut so quickly resulting in a kind of dumping

It gets harder as you are further out to maintain this 30/30 regimen, sometimes I am so thirsty after a meal I find I'm counting the minutes LOL

Thank you all. great advise xxx
