Failing Gastric Bands WHY?

Hello as everyone here will understand we worry the gastric surgery may not work,Bypass sleeves etc seem to be guarented but I see some bands dont work WHY?
Is it usually as some people dont work with their bands ie eating high calorie foods or is it because they dont have good after care?
As I am self funding 6500 pounds is alot of money for something not to work,I wonder do self funders bands work better as they are paying for them (no offence at NHS patients) all this is going around in my head?
xx:cry:

Found this on why bands fail???
Do some people fail with the band?
Every medical treatment has a failure rate and the LAGB is no exception. About 10-15% of gastric band patients will fail due to a variety of reasons, including an inability to comply with the nutritional requirements of the band, physical inactivity or a failure to attend the follow-up clinic to have the band adjusted properly. It may occasionally be due to leakage from the lap band or a slippage. We do all we can to reduce the risk of band failure, but it becomes very difficult in circumstances where the individual is simply not committed to working with the device. However, if you are really determined to get a good outcome, most of the reasons for failure can be overcome

Me too,I haver will power and 6500 other reasons will help also, are you having/had a band.....Bypass?xx

Hi there,

No WLS surgery has 100 percent guarantee. Even with a bypass or sleeve you could cheat by eating high calorie slider foods.

Just because you pay for private does not always mean you get the better service. Some providers seem very lacking in the aftercare department, only offering 3 fills etc. You may have the band for 15-20 years, and adjustments need to made in the whole lifetime of the band to maintain loss.

NHS funded ops havea lifetime aftercare, no matter what the problem is. Faulty bands are replaced, fills are given freely and there is always help at the end of a phone.

So no, NHS banders do not have a higher failure rate... its how you chose to work with the tool you are given, how you follow the rules and how much knowledge you learn prior to having it done.

How I see it, my band was a gift, a gift that cost the NHS £7,500, that money could have been used for all kinds of operations but they chose to help me save my life, there is no way I am going to waste it, no way.

I know you must be worrying and nervous at the thought of it not working, it will though, if you want it too, no matter how it's funded. ;)

Hi I knew I shouldnt of put the NHS bit in I didnt mean someone having it with the NHS would work anyless as we are all indivdual, just if you are paying for it yourself then you 'may' work at it more?
Yes many private clinics only have a smal aftercare package my prginal one only had a 30 day after care so I am not going with them,Lifetime care usually covers just diet advise not unlimited refils and consultants appointments they have to be paid for seperately with most private lifetime packages.
You sound like you have found a good company, who are they and what are their lifetime packages,is it a lifetime of refils and appointments? Many Thanksxx

my band failed after 3.5 years im a nhs wls patient, if i had been a private patient i would of had to pay again for a de and rebanding op and i simply wouldnt of been able to afford that. i have no complaints with the nhs care ive recieved since i started my journey they have been brilliant. my replacement band is great and its working well x

Hi why did your 1st band fall?Did you lose on it as you had it for 3.5 years?xx

There is a growing trend of people who have paid privately for bands applying to their PCT for aftercare funding on the basis of the amount of money they have saved the NHS, not only the cost of the band but the cost of any co morbidies that would have occured or were helped by the weight loss..I know several people who have done that and are now getting NHS aftercare...its worth a try once you lose some weight!!

of course i lost weight with it i lost 7st 7llbs with my 1st band.

my 1st band slowly broke down over a period of 12 months i knew myself as i could still eat bigger portions after fills that was because the fill was leaking out. on my last xray fill with my old band the fill tube had came off completley from the fill end and it could be seen very clearly on the screen they told me there and then it would all have to be removed and replaced, they inintially told me i would need 2 more ops 1 to remove it then another 6 weeks later to replace it, i went in for the removal but i was lucky and i woke up with a new band as he said the old 1 hadnt scared my tum to bad and my pouch hadnt been abused. im so greatfull i am lucky enough to be a nhs patient as theres no way i would of been able to pay again.
i must state what happened to me is RARE but it can happen. i still have no regrets and banding has changed my life in many ways.

Well done you fantastic weightloss.how long did it take you to lose the 7stones?
I think that if theres an obvious band fault they should replace it like anything it can be faulty can't it.
I am going to my GP Wednesday my BMI is 43 and I am admittidly confused with the NIC guidelines but it says over 40 BMI,just the bit where it says:
· the person has been receiving or will receive intensive management in a specialist obesity service
?
I have done Cambridge Diet and Lighterlife with My GPS consent and a few years ago I was on reductil,I have done the whole slimming club things and lost weight and kept it off for a long period,do you think this is a good case for PCT to say yes? Sorry xx

it took me 18 months to lose 7st 7, then i was happy to maintain that loss from that point.

the nhs replace no problem, private do not as there bands are usually only under guarantee for the 1st 28 days.

for now all you need a gp referal, in my area the surgeon decides from meeting you if your suitable for sugery, i didnt have anything to do with fighting for the funding side as it was done for me by them. but all areas are different. the only down side with the nhs is it takes time with the high demand for surgery.
