Green Tea

Just noticed how long ago i sent for those tea bags and they have not arrived. Not very good customer service LOL

Morrys are doing the Twinnings green tea mixed box of 25 ie 5 flavour for £1.57

Worth a mention but in pre-assessment we advise no green tea (or herbal products) 7 days pre op.

Don't know how accurate info was but an ex patient told me the docs had linked her (and another pt with same problem on same day) drinking frequent daily amounts green tea down to a blood clotting problem (both bleed heavily post op), it is known for its anticoagulant properties other than this its a great beneficial drink.

Ooo' er I just put this down on my shopping list to start taking but maybe I will buy it ready for post op instead. I too thought the pineapple and grapefruit one sounds nice.

Its funny I have pretty much gone off ordinary tea over the last couple of months. Been drinking more hot Robinsons apple and blackcurrant instead.

Have you tried Liqorice tea - tastes like those old chewy wooden sticks we had in the old days - fab, especially when cooled down - but hard to find!! Ruth x

Tastes vile ! A friend left some sachets but after the first I gave them back. URGHHHHH

Pineapple and grapefruit sounds nice and not heard anything about those (although should not take real grapefruit with simvastatin) and there are quite a few nice fruit teas in supermarkets.
Don't get me wrong herbal supplements can be very beneficial but some can cause problems when they interact with anaesthetic-

Kava
St Johns wort
Valerian root

increased bleeding risk -
  • Gingko biloba
  • Garlic
  • Ginseng
  • Fish oil
  • Dong quai
  • Feverfew
increased cardiovascular risk

Garlic
Ephedra

these are just a few sites I found info on but there are more (Google - surgery and herbal supplements)

As long as you are pre-assessed 10-14 days pre op (or at least get assessment date) and tell pre-assessment nurse what you take and they can advise.

A friend in China keeps sending me masses of loose green tea and also flower tea - osmanthus, jasmine and chrysanthemum. There's so much I can't manage it all. If anyone would like some let me know. It's very expensive to buy here.
