Now then! Hello all.

All booked up, am off for my bypass in a couple of weeks. Completely not bothered, had several ops in past, x-nurse, only thing I am slightly uncomfortable about is having no bra on and my blammers swinging about.

Gave up drinkng a few years back (was only a social drinker - but not a happy drunk so gave that up as a bad idea), gave up smoking at the click of the fingers last Sept after 30 years smoking. Can I give up over-eating? Nope. Can I diet the weight off? Yup. Do I put it back on again? Yup. Yo yo. Have arthritic hips now so can't exercise it off. Enough is enough. I don't want to spend the second part of my life being fat and unhealthy and even worse - beating myself up with the guilty stick over my unhealthy relationship with food. (Yes have tried the counselling approach).

Solution? Simple....bypass. So that's exactly what I am going to do. In just under 2 weeks. Few grand out is a small price to pay for the end of this obsessive cycle.

So - what do I need to know? Not the medical stuff - I am fine on that..what's the stuff they don't tell you?

Have been reading some threads and am absolutely gob smacked at the accomplishment of some of you. Amazing!

Hi tpt welcome to minis I also am nurse and weighting on bypass.
I was lucky enough to get funding so am going through the process.
Good luck with your op. There are some amazingly successful people on here, they have all worked so hard, and are an inspiration
Nice to have you on board

omg
no bra hadnt even thought of my g's hanging about
omg
welcome to mini's xxx and well done on your decision x

Thanks ladies. I haven't told anyone apart from my husband. I can afford it so went for it. It's actually quite cathartic to be able to talk about it (in private) here! I am not a nurse any longer, I re-trained and am now a college Lecturer, and part of the reason for the op is that after being on my feet the best part of the day, my hips hurt so bad come evening that I struggle with my mobility - drastic action is needed!

The date is the 21st July - so only a couple of weeks. Just waiting for the paperwork to come through.

Ebay are going to make a fortune out of me all the clothes I will be selling!! Lucky I am such a hoarder - I still have all my 'thin' clothes in the loft!!!

:) Welcome and good luck with your op :)

Hi tpt - welcome to the site. This bra thing really bothers me as well. I posted a thread here and there are some good suggestions. It all really boils down to the scar. Will your op be open or lap? Most of the lap people say they had no bother with wearing a bra - the ones who have had open surgery say it depends on the length of the scar. My surgeon, apparently, favours a long incision which starts just below the boobs right down to the belly button! But some surgeons start the incision about 4" below the boobs so wearing a bra isn't a problem. Try posting a thread with the name of your surgeon - someone will pop along quickly and let you know what kind of scar you'll probably get.

I love the comment about your 'thin' clothes. Mine are all in the loft, too! I can't wait to start getting rid of the 'fat' ones. Take care, Marion xx

Hi tpt...Like you I gave up the dreaded fags some years ago "just like that"....and just like you could i knock the overeating on the head.."nope" and like you I'm having my op for a by-pass this Friday and like you view it as a new chapter in my life which is NOT ruled by food and overeating and all the c**p feelings which follow on the back of this...SO welcome and good luck with your op...

Hi & welcome to minis. Things they don't tell you, hmmm....

Okay here is one, you most likely will not feel hungry post-op. Most people don't realise that they will have to be reminded to eat early on. You must consume a high level of protein in order to heal and avoid drifting into starvation mode. Protein supplements are your best bet to get it in if you are so inclined. Another thing is that the surgery will mess with your taste buds, things you once loved will taste vile and you will crave new/different flavors. Be prepared and have a variety of foods in small quantities so that you can move on to something else if you are unhappy with a certain taste.

Finally, something that I never heard from a professional, your head will be the hardest part of the surgery. Your plumbing will be changed but you still have your 'fat' head to deal with. You will still have all the bad habits, tendencies & emotional food issues you had before surgery. You and only you have to make that change and you have to be prepared to do it quick so that you can make the most of your golden window which is the first 6-9 months post-op.

HTH,
Nic;)

Oh, I was able to wear my bra home from the hospital because my cuts were several inches below my bra line, I had keyhole bypass. I did however switch to soft cups instead of my usual underwire for about 10 days due to the swelling (trapped wind mostly) in my upper belly.

can I just ask, why you have to have open surgery and not key hole, what was the deciding factor? Sorry to be nosey.

Hi and welcome to minis. Sorry can't help as haven't had surgery yet. Everyone on here is so friendly so others will be able to help.

Thanks for the replies - I am having keyhole not open. I nipped to Matalan last night and got a pair of even larger jim-jam bottoms for after the op on your advise - thanks for that!

Good luck with your op hunni and hopefully soon we will be saying hi to you on the losing side.

xx

In most Walsall patients cases its because the surgeon prefers to do it that way and also down to the funding.
