has anyone had a conversion from band to bypass?

Hello I am post op revision from band to rny with fobi ring (had it done Thursday) the damage that I had done with my band being too tight caused irreversible damage to my osphaegeous and had two surgeons operating on me (MrVDB and Mr Kelly) as it was a battle to do!! I feel such relief now and am able to drink and not get that golf ball swallowing feeling - I have been told I will always need to watch portion control as my ospheageous won't push through to my stomach anymore! But hopefully no other problems xx would do it all again in a heartbeat!! Xxxx

Exactly the same with me. Food can't pass through naturally because of the damage done by my band which is why my sleeve then had to be converted. They only realised the true extent of the damage after I had my sleeve for 6 months. I had 2 surgeons operating on me for both my sleeve and my bypass too. :/

Things are perfect for me now and I love the fact I can eat and drink with no " golf-ball-stuck" feelings anymore!

I hope things are good for you now xxx

Hi Bluedawny - just wanted to say hi as you are the first person I have seen on here who was operated on by Mr Van den Bossche. He did my mini gastric bypass in Southampton on 26th September.

Sorry to hear about the problems you have had and glad to hear things are now really looking up x

Reading these messages, I do wonder how many people have problems with their band. I'd like to know the %. I'm having a band fitted on Monday and naturally I'm nervous. I just hope to God I'm one of the lucky ones that it works for, I can't afford to convert it at a later date and I feel bad enough spending thousands of pounds on myself to stop me eating too much. It does feel like failure.

It's not failure needing surgery, it's treatment for a medical condition.

My band failed but, to be controversial, it's probably as much my fault. I should have had a bypass in the first place and should have listened to the advice from the surgeon

It's all about what you eat

I think more people have successes than failures with the band. It's not a failure needing surgery and it's not the easy way out people think it is. You still have to work hard with whichever surgery you have, probably more so with the band. Good luck xx

band to bypass

:confused:hi manda having trouble with band which I have had over 3 years and now put weight back on. at meeting with dietician in September she asked if I would like a conversion to bypass and said yes. had an appointment yesterday with my jenneh who advised that there are several hoops I need to go through before they will consider the revision surgery. can you tell me the timelines for your revisional surgery from going to sunderland royal and discussing the revisional surgery to the actual surgery date and how it has all been for you. it took me 18 months from going to my gp to my surgery at sunderland so concerned it will take this long again.
cheers SuperstarAnge

what is the cost going to be from band to bypass i had mine done private and its the worst thing ive ever done its not worked at all, i to wish i had donr the bypass from the start

I had a band in 2009 and a bypass 8 wks ago. I can honestly say the bypass is a breeze in comparison! At least I can eat healthy food. And no more reflux!!!!

That's what I hated on the band couldn't eat healthy food but could eat rubbish no probs :(((

I was seen by the nurse at my first appt for looking at revision yesterday. She said over 30% of bands fail. That's too high fir whatever reason eh ?

I had mine out on NHS after I had it done privately. If its fir medical issues eg pain, can't drink NHS have to accept you. I'm now waiting for nhs revisional surgery to by pass hopefully :)

Nhs wouldn't help me at all for any of my surgeries :( I hope it all goes well for you and you get your conversion.....its the best thing I have done :) xx

I had my band privately. My consultant didn't diagnose a slip for 18 months despite untold problems. His answer was to keep filling and unfilling and charging £100 each time. When I insisted on an x-ray I'd run out of money and was refused help. I became so ill I ended up in A&E and had emergency surgery. My local hospital has a specialist bariatric team so I was in good hands. My band was actually intact and repositioned and was NHS funded. Had it have been eroded or broken it would have been removed and no option of replacing or revision as my BMI was then 21.

Unfortunately it wasn't positioned correctly and I've had on going problems. I've put up with it for too long and my new consultant has agreed it was never right. It is placed at the base of my oesophagus with no pouch above. It is strangulating me yet I'm gaining weight. He has said it needs removing ASAP and had offered a bypass. Again NHS funded. I'm booked mid January for revision.

I feel lucky I've not had to fight for funding. I should really feel completely fed up and frustrated. I did for a long while but now looking forwards and trying to be more positive.

Well I was approved by NHS and had to move and new area said no. I had it done privately then n it worked. Sadly NHS ruined it n nearly killed me . They gave me meds I was allergic to n I was so sick I almost sucked up my stomach that herniated into my diaphragm n twisted. I had emergency surgery n they had to remove band. I was gutted as none of my fault. Then I put on so much weight, six stone I git sleep apnoea n have to sleep on a machine. Feel like Hannibal lecter :( I'm also having knee ops cos of the weight on my arthritic body.
Sleep apnea is a co morbidity with diabetes in east of England so I qualify . NHS cocked me up, they can bloody well put be back :)))
