Sorry on a bit of a downer again, I'm so jealous of all the people who have really good restriction and are losing loads. I so wanted to be 15st for xmas and now I'll be lucky to get into the 15's. How can I boost my restriction and lose? I cant afford the gym or swimming, got to give my Son an IOU for his Birthday, I go for a walk most days just don't know how to eat less and start getting some good loses

Eating less is easy just don't put it in your mouth :D

What is your average weight loss each week? two to three pounds is really good so if you're around that rate worry not.

If you want to maximise your loss you have to be scientific. You need to sign up to a food logging website, there are lots of them out there that are free. You enter the food you've eaten and it tells you the calories, fats, carbs and protein etc. They can help show you just what you are eating and in what values

When was your last appointment with your dietitian? what advice did they give you about calories and protein intake? You need to make sure you're getting at least 70g of protein per day and 60% of your food should be protein based 30% carbs and 15% fats. Aim to get at least 900 to 1000 calories a day, more if you are exercising

Often you will find increasing your protein intake actually speeds up weight loss so that might be the answer. If you are making bad food choices or not eating enough then that might be the reason for your slow loss. You also need to make sure you drink lots of fluid

Exercise is vital if you want to maximise your weight loss. Walking is pretty rubbish to be honest in terms of the amount of calories burnt over the time it takes to do them, and even walking quickly for 30 minutes will burn just over 200 calories. Think about it if a pound of fat is worth about 3500 calories so walking for 30 minutes a day would take you 17 days to burn up one pound, hardly earth shattering

Do you know anyone with an exercise bike they no longer use or maybe even some workout DVDs that they don't want? as these would help you to lose weight quicker than just walking a little each day

Good luck with it

Some good advice here Sue... do hope you soon feel better about it very soon, I think you have done a tremendous job so far Angel.

Love and hugs xxx

I have protein with every meal, carbs once a day at the most, no added fat. I have to be careful with fruit as it makes my pouch hurt, don't eat crisps, one bar of chocolate a week, 2 milky coffees a day with 1% fat milk which is lower fat then semi skimmed. 1.5 litres of water a day. I dont have any friends so cant borrow exercise bikes or dvds. I'll have to ask for exercise stuff for xmas instead of clothes or smellies. I've decided not to poat any more and come away from here for a while until I sort myself out

Sue, don't go whilst you feel like that, it won't do you any good. Have you looked in charity shops or eBay for work out DVDs or do you have like a free ad paper in your area for any fitness equipment. This really is a horrible time of the year, it's so cold and dark, I know how difficult it is to get motivated, my dogs in the summer used to get two long walks in the summer a day, they now have about a forty five min walk because they don't like the cold either! Again keep drinking loads of fluid and munching on the veg and protein, I wish you luck my love xx

Sue..
have you tried asking for gym on prescription from your G.P.
I know a lot of health authorities do it..it may be worth while asking?(if you don't ask,you don't get

I realise you are not quite 6 months out yet but it may be worth doing the 5 day pouch test...???(i would check with the team first though)
I understand if you need to stand back from the forum,to get your head straight..but come back soon to tell us how you are getting on...
thinking of you sue xx

What about the library cant you borrow some dvd's there? or maybe have a look on line for some trials. I hope you find something that suits you, good luck.

You have had some brilliant advice already, Karl is so educated about all this weightloss malarkey :D I hope you manage to do something that helps you with your weightloss :D XX

some great advice above - rest assurred - I had times when weight loss stalled but then had a good loss for no apparent reason. As long as you are working with your tool hopefully things will improve.

But don't step away from here - it is times like this you need the support of others - no-one will judge you

A big hug
Gill

Sue whatever you do dont disappear that is not the answer.

There is some good advice and I agree with the protein increase as you need that the most.

We are all different in the way we lose weight and they way we adjust to this op. It will come of just be patient hun.

Big hugs. xxxxx

You could also try freecycle - that's a site where people give stuff away, all you have to do is collect it.

As for no friends, maybe it's time to get out and meet some new people, it's not healthy to be away from other people and it's amazing how kind and supportive people can be if you ask for the help.

There are always groups you can join for free, there are libraries that would have fitness dvd's, and I am sure if you asked some of us we might have the odd one lurking in out deepest darkest cupboards...

Exercise does not have to cost a penny...

You can :-

Put on music and dance like a loon for 40 minutes
Make up your own routines
Use household items, tins, bags of sugar or squash or water as weights
You can power walk

There is a lot you can do but its got to come from within...

You have done so well, now is not the time to give up and withdraw...keep talking, we can all help you through this patch :)

Hi Karlos
would you be able to suggest one of these food logging websites as ive had a look but cant seem to see the thing i want :D
Thanks xx Dawn

Sue i hear you on the weight loss front, i'm chief moaner about slow loss......

Freecycle is an excellent idea! Also not sure if you still have an old vhs player but the charity shops and car boots always have cheap videos (workout) for sale for pennies....

But tbh i'm with Cazbandy, put a cd on and dance like a loony for 30 minutes. Then you have the stairs, do a little workout allowing so many minutes of up and down the first stair and build it up....

Finally, as you may know i did the 5 day pouch test and it has given me some restriction. Now when i came out of hospital i had no dietician support at all, but when i spoke to her she told me to try and eat fibrous veg as it fills you and helps the 'works' move better....

Celery is great for burning calories as well, i think because your body has to work to burn it apparently.

If you want to ask me anything about the 5 day pouch test give me a pm and i'll help as much as i can :) x

Hi Sue, I hope you are still around and haven't abandoned us.

You say your restrict carbs to just 1 meal a day. Is that on the instruction of your team/dietician? I was told off by my dietician for concentrating on protein to the cost of limiting carbs. Carbs are required to help burn the protein (I think I'm remembering that correctly). I was told to have carbs with EVERY meal.

I think Karl's advice is brilliant and he should know. Good luck sweetie. xx

I dont have carbs with every meal  I had half a pitta 2 days ago and about a third of one tonight and have had potatoes but I dont have it with every meal....Do I need to have more carbs? XX

Some really good suggestions, although in addition I would definitely recommend trying to get an appt with your dietician if you can and have a good chat about things. The one thing I'll say about carbs is that we all get told something different....for example, my provider recommends filling up on protein, then veg, and only carbs if you still have room...very similar to Atkins I suppose which I have always found achieves good results. I read a paper recently that explained the metabolism of different foods groups in a bypasser...in a nut-shell fat absorption is greatly reduced but the body still metabolises carbs preferentially.

By reading what you typical daily intake is, imho it sounds like you are following a really good, balanced, healthy diet. Karlos's suggestion of using a calorie tracker could be a good idea, as it may be that calorie intake could be creeping up here and there perhaps with portion size, as you mention that perhaps restriction isn't as great as you think it might be? xxxxx

Please speak to your team Jacqui, they all do things differently. I suspect at your stage you are better off keeping the carbs low, but as you progress, changes may well be advised. xx
