How long were you out for?

With a week to go until my op, I was wondering how long I can expect to be 'out' for under the general anaesthetic?

As someone who has never had a general anaesthetic before, I would also be interested to know in people's experiences when they came around, how they felt, and how long before they could get up and walk about?

My op was 100 and some odd minutes, and they wake you up pretty much immediately in recovery. Once they observe you for a short while, you're moved on to the ward. You just feel really, really tired for up to a couple of hours after you're woken up, and then you're more or less normal.

At least that was my - and a typical - experience.

Hello! I also never had a general anesthetic before the op and I was fretting for no reason lol

They give you 2 injections, one to relax you first then the one that puts you under. I honestly don't remember the second one as I was out from the first one in about 5 seconds. I was under for 2h. But the next few hours when I was awake are a blur. Felt very dream-like. I was an afternoon op and had a visitor 8pm, which I only recall because he touched my foot. Apparently I was slurring my words hahah! I had to get up to pee midnight, but only needed help out of bed, was ok to do everything else. Was more in a bloated discomfort than pain.

Anesthesia does affect people in different ways though, but once you go under, it's gonna feel like one of those moments you suddenly nod off and wake up a sec later

My op was 4 hours, it should have been 2, but i had adhesions. I was given the antidote in theatre, immediately after the op. Most people wake up slowly in recovery, but i woke up straight away. I remember everything clearly from that moment on. I was only in recovery for about 45 mins because by that time I was asking to get out if bed, and drinking glass after glass of water (the thirst is unreal). I was allowed up after 3 hours, and was walking around and ringing my family. The anesthetist said it was quite unusual to have such a 'live one' as he put it. He also told i was one of the few patients he's had that have gone under and come around laughing! I know the others who had the op that day were all still quite groggy for about 5 to 6 hours after the op.

I felt very uncomfortable after the op, but the pain is bearable. I took one dose if oramorph, but hated it so much that i just got by on paracetamol after that. The wind pain is uncomfortable, and takes several days to go.

I had never had anesthesia before, and was petrified because i was about 23 stone at the time.

I had a band and had a few complications but was out for under two hours. I fell asleep and felt I woke up a few minutes later. I had morphine before being brought round then another shot within 10 mins of being brought round. I was out of theatre by three o'clock. Was hyper and couldn't sleep. I was up to the loo within a couple of hours. They gave me a sleeping pill around midnight as I was overtired and a bit distressed. I did not feel distressed lol. But I was walking the corridors and couldn't sit still. I was awake again at 4.30am

The anisthetic seemed to make me hyper lol

But I had no ill effects and apart from the double hit of morphine immediately following surgery I only had two lots of co co-codamol the next day and have not had a painkiller since

It was a breeze for me

I skipped down to the operating theatre ,which did surprise the staff some what!
I was the first one down for the day I asked the time and It was 8.45 am my sister waited and saw me been wheeled by her around 1.30 pm
woke up on my ward feeling like I had not been touched if it wasn't for the wounds and plaster I would have thought my operation had been cancelled!
no wind pain or any pain at all was up by evening tea and walking to the toilet by the morning

I had a band fitted and i seemed to be gone for awhile.... i went down about 1.30 and was back to the ward about 7.30?? from memory anyway, not sure how long i was in recovery for but i remember being awake on and off in recovery room. I was fine until i was told i could get up and get dressed, as soon as i stood the sickness come over me which sent me back to bed with further obs, but was discharged just a couple of hours later, so no ill effects, i have had 3 general anesthetics in my lifetime and each time the effects have been completely different !!

I don't know if it was just different in my hospital. I was private at the Nuffield. I walked into theatre and was warned beforehand that I would be brought round while is was still in theatre, that the warned people about this as patients often panicked thinking they had woken up during the op. I didn't go to a recovery area but was rolled straight back to my room where the nurse came in every 15 mins to do obs. I still had the drip and oxygen back in my room. I was not aware of anything going wrong with the op till my surgeon told me the next morning I felt so good waking up

Hi,

I had my sleeve 30/10, the putting to sleep was fine, was already led on the operating table and I felt relatively calm.

The coming round was quite a blur, despite having lots of shots of a to sickness meds I continued to feel really nauseous. This continued into the evening and every time I tried to take any pain relief I vomited. Obviously this has subsided relatively quickly. Managed to cope with paracetamol pain relief through my iv! Although the gas pain was pretty uncomfortable.

I'm home now and the only thing I have struggled with is feeling a bit short of breath going up the stairs and sleeping on my back!

I went down to theatre approximately 4:30 and woke in recovery very groggy around 6:30/7. I was in and out of consciousness. I remember briefly being wheeled to the ward and I was out again. Then my husband came and I was in and out while he was there. I didn't wake up properly till around 11pm and I gt up shortly after for the toilet.
