Hi all i am going to the UK soon for a gastric sleeve and i am a nervous wreck, i am just wondering if anybody else out there has gone tru this type of surgery and had the added worrie of traveling abraud ......and might want to share your experiences good or bad. I appologise in advance if there is already a thread on this subject i couldent find it.

Hi Irish lady

I didn't have to travel but I did have a sleeve, it's totally understandable to be nervous! My mistake was that I wasn't nervous! I didn't give it a second thought until the day, bit stupid as mentally I probably wasn't prepared!
I'm two weeks out and feel great, I'm tired a lot but that's to be expected I think after surgery of this type

Where are you having your op ?

Hi Adrienne

Thanks for the reply its great to be able to speek to ppl going thru the same thing, in a way i feel totally unprepared i know what you mean, i am due to have the sleeve mid may in nuffield leeds under the care of mr halstead, whare was yours done? how are you finding it 2 weeks out ?

Hi mine was in Sutton Coldfield

I feel great, the only thing that makes me realise I've had surgery is the tiredness, I need a nap mid afternoon! Unless that's just my age!
I'll write more in the morning Hun, I'm half asleep, or take a look at my diary
It's had a sleeve by default but happy
Ask me anything I'm happy to share xx

Hi Irish Lady,

I'm in Ireland too and will be travelling abroad to have my sleeve surgery on 6th May. I cannot wait!! I have booked assistance through the airport and onto the flight for the return journey just in case, may be an idea for you too? Better to have it organised than need it and not have it organised, well that was my thinking!

All the best with your surgery and please keep in touch xx:)

Hi I'm from Ireland and had my bypass in Manchester in January! I hate flying so I got the boat! I had no problems and the journey went great! I hope everything goes well and if you have any worries or question, just ask-I'm sure you will find someone that has gone through it on here!

Good luck! X

Hi andie1379

I actually taught about getting the boat to be honest its the flight home that has me in a heap I am bad for flying anyway without the added discomfort of just having surgery! I am still deciding what to do, I have an option to have the surgery hear in Ireland but its 5k more than if I went to the UK so I am still weighing up my options

Hi Irish Lady,
I am going to the Czech Republic. I understand your concerns with regards to the flight but try to see it as a small hurdle. You will be back home before you know it. I know your OH will be with you too but really do consider the assisted access just to be on the safe side if it is at all concerning you. I understand it will be priority boarding etc.

I find it a total disgrace that there are not more services/clinics in Ireland/N.Ireland. I wasn't able to have NHS funding as it is not even considered in NI and so have chosen to go down this route privately.
Do you have a surgery date?xx

Will do banana19. Best of luck with your trip. I have no date yet but it will be may/june i am still deciding between going to the uk or having it hear which is more expensive. I do agree with you about the lack of ability thru nhs and hse services in ireland/ni, i was on the public list hear but its about 3 yrs wait so thats why i decided to go private.

I am flying home tomorrow to Edinburgh from Birmingham on my own, I'm not really worried about it, Ha! ask me that again in the morning! I have a wheeled cabin case to pull along, I'll ask for help to get it in the overhead bin, either that or tuck it under my seat. On the way here on the plane, a very kind guy got my case down for me without me asking him. :) I'm being driven to airport from hospital driver, the getting picked up in Edinburgh by my husband to be driven home. My surgeon, anesthetist, and nurses have all said I'll be fine and I'm sure I will. There's no competition really, 1 hour in a plane, 5 hours in a train or 6 hours or more in a car. I'll post tomorrow how I get on...
