Medication post-op

I have read that wls has a really positive effect on diabetes and that sufferers can usually come off their meds quite quickly.
I'm wondering if anyone has managed to come off their meds for high blood pressure or high cholesterol since having wls? If so, roughly how long did it take, and/or how much weight did you lose before it started to have an effect?

Yup - off blood pressure tablets. Almost straight away. Had the bp done yesterday and it's better than it's been for ages. Hurrah!

I hadn't thought of that. I have high blood pressure and take four different types of meds for it - would be great to come off them! x

Hello there WLWB

I used to take eight BP tablets and I am now down to just one low dose Lisinopril (sp) tablet with normal BP.

This happened quite quickly within a couple of weeks of being post op.

For Diabetes I took Metformin tablets and twice daily Exenatide injections. From the day after my operation I have not taken any Diabetes meds, i am still monitored by my GP for it but he and the Specialist Dr Stephens at Trafford general consider me cured.

Cholesterol is not something I have ever suffered with, though I was prescribed Simvasastin as a Diabetic. I am still taking this though whilst my team make a decision as to its continuance

Hope this helps, and good luck xxx

My endochrinologist said that I should be off 2 of my 3 diabetes medications from the week before surgery but I will stay on metformin for at least a short while after because, ironically, they feel that coming off it immediately might have an adverse effect on my BP and eyesight in my case. (They hope that I will only need it for a short time before it reduces and finally is not needed at all. Yippee!!!!!! :D:D:D:D:D)

My BP and the water tablets should end at the same time which is also great.

He didn't mention it specifically, but I think that the statin might be a different matter as it is a preventative rather than a treatment and it is NHS policy that everyone over a certain age takes a statin and it is one of your GP's performance targets to hae people on them.

If it works the idea of not only losing weight but possibly going 12 tablets a day down to just 1 is incredible :bliss:

love
