Hi guys, looking for some advice. I had my gastric bypass in oct 2009 but have had depression for many years before that. Since my bypass though I've struggled to get in under control. Anyone else had this? I've tried many meds and even had a combo of antidepressants with an anti psychotic. This worked but caused weight gain which it's renowned for. Has anyone successfully managed their depression and anxiety, what meds etc.

Any advice or where u can go for further info etc would be appreciated. I do see a psychiatrist but obv they are not specialist us weight loss surgery

Thanks for reading x

hi, i have had major depression, bipolar and anxiety for many years i had to try so many different meds to treat this but like you said most meds cause weight gain, im currently on buspirone for anxiety sertraline for depression aripiprazole for bipolar, but finding things hard at the moment since having my op so hoping to change a few but have limited choice as the weight gain and dont want to ruin what im doing right now and the weight loss i have done, but i know im comfort eatting again so thing need to change, good luck hun

That's for taking the time to reply. It's so hard isn't it. I was really good on fluoxetine and olanzapine but weight went on and that isn't good for mental health either. I'm now taking fluoxetine and amisulpiride but am so tired and just keeping falling asleep all the time but not sleeping at night :(
X

no problem i was on fluoxetine for over 2 years they suited me for a while, have you talked to you surgoen about how your feeling aswell as your mental health consultant

I wasn't sure if the surgeon would be able to help - do you think he would? I hate having depression etc

hi andrea
have you been able to access some sort of talking therapy to figure out what caused the depression in the first place? xXx

Hiya. I'm a psych nurse and a bander, it's really hard for anyone else to give advice, like with weight loss surgery, there's no one size fits all, so it's difficult with the meds... Olanzapine is the worst for weight gain, how about changing when u take your meds? Also ? Quetiapine rather then the Amisulpride...
But obviously your consultant knows best and should be more then skilled to understand your weight issues also, after all weight and depression work hand in hand...
Good luck, I do hope u get something sorted soon.

Louise x

Hi I am so sorry that you are suffering I have struggled with depression for over 30 years. I am also a care my husband who has bipolar ocd agoraphobia high anxiety and so I understand your problems. There is no magic wand but I was referred to Mind the lady I saw was great compared to the psychiatrist but as someone else has said no one size fits all good luck

Hi Louise

Thanks for responding. I have tried many meds and the best for me so far was olanzapine :( I tried quetiapine and it knocked me doolally and I was on a low dose!

I think I will email mr ammori and see if he can help or offer advice.

Thanks it's good to know I'm not on my own.

Xx

I would contact prof ammori just to see if he can help he's my surgeon aswell

im on duluxotine for a antidepressant and quitiapin as a stabiliser and it made me gain nearly 5 stone , although once the weight was on after a few months I stopped gaining and now awaiting bypass to get it off. I know longer look at why I do things why I eat like I do etc it just made me more miserable so now just take a day at a time , but im lucky my meds work well for me the weightgain was worth it for the stabilty

Hi Andrea75

Is your weight under control since your 2009 bypass? Reason I ask is, could u go back on Olanzapine with the help of the bypass...?

Unfortunately not. I went on olanzapine after the bypass and put on 2 stone and still can't get it off :(

Hello Andrea. I too suffer from anxiety depression and presently am on fluoxetine. My belief is that my mind has stopped me being successful regarding weight loss after bypass. Many reasons why I say that and too many and varied to go into lol. But the one thing I do find helps is swimming..... I don't always do it.... have months/years away from it... but I know that when I include exercise, it helps enormously. Don't want to preach, but if I don't get up with a purpose each morning, I can go down hill quickly :(

Hope you find your answer really soon :)
