mouthfuls

Hey guys, I am really, really struggling with mouthful sizes.

I've had my band since February and on my sheets from the hospital it says that meat should be cut up to the size of a rubber on a pencil. I just can't do it, I feel it's hardly worth putting in my mouth!

How did you guys break the connection of not eating for enjoyment but only eating for necessity?

Im not a bander but a bypasser, with me if i dont cut it down to very small pieces, I get a pain in my chest, so then its no fun eating, I also now eat very slower, and this is aided by putting my knife and fork down between mouthfuls.

Another tip I was give is to use a toddlers fork, that way you can't get so much onto it.

Hope this helps u out.

Hi

They probably say that to make sure you dont take too big a mouthful and face having it stick - not nice. It might seem like overkill but some banders with good restriction struggle with meat.

The second part is the tough part! head hunger can be a problem but learning to enjoy what you do eat can be too. Not easy this WLS thing is it?

There is no reason why food cant still be enjoyed, its about adapting your new way of eating regime into everyday life - takes time but its worth it xx

To be honest, I get food stuck lots and it doesn't really bother me as I'm used to it now and it normally comes back up. I think I get food stuck because I still try to eat things I can't and my mouthfuls are too big.

I wondered about that too. I'm
Veggie but despite that anything pencil rubber size would get lost in my big mouth! I'm only on liquids but I get really thirsty and struggle to sip instead of gulp! Xx

Oh no! food shouldnt be getting stuck lots :( and you are right the reason it does is either you are eating too quickly or too big a mouthful or not chewing enough.

Slow down, chew and enjoy x

I don't cut my food into pieces that small, but I really do chew well! I chew like a cow chewing grass!
I used to get food stuck all the time but it's really occasional now. The chewing has become second nature now. Also it's really important to let the mouthful of food you have swallowed go down before you put the next bit in. I always used to have the next bit ready on my fork whilst chewing but have had to break that habit. If I eat too fast the food will get stuck.
It's bad for your band to be bringing up food everyday, it becomes too sensitive and you could suffer from band slippage! Scary!
When I first went to my GP about having a band, she said "you will never enjoy your food again". That is total rubbish, I love my food. I enjoy looking up recipies online and trying them out and I still indulge my love of cake now and again, just in smaller quantities.
you'll get there, changing the way you eat is changing the habit of a life time and is hard, but very do-able!

Yeah, I find when I eat my lunch at work which is normally a salad or pasta of some sort, because I'm working in between mouthfuls it rarely gets stuck. But when I'm sat at the table eating my tea at home I'm waiting on my next mouthful. It's seems easier if I keep myself busy while eating!

Hello fellow bander, I am 16th months out and I still eat with a teaspoon to keep me from over feeding the mouthfuls, just make sure when you eat meat , you chew chew chew......xxx

Up until my 4th fill i could eat a fair sized mouthful and eat it quite fast....but now, im having to learn about taking smaller bites and chewing really well because if i dont everything gets stuck, even slider foods.
Massive learning curve and new lesson to be leared after every fill.
Ive now dug out my teaspoons and taking rubber sized meat bites, which is very difficult as its taking me ages to finish a meal.
