The day went as follows,
7am Reported to reception and ticked off on list and told to wait in lounge (very posh!)
7.05 am Nurse came and escorted us to HDU which was twin room and another lovely lady was also having same op today.
7.15 am Nurses and lots of people asking for details etc and explaining what was happening. Obligatory blood sample and blood pressure etc and sugar levels all done.
7.45 am Handed lovely sea green ball gown (sorry dressing gown) with matching paper knickers. Quick change and back on bed. Also support socks.
8am Anaesthetist (?) came asked lots of stuff also surgeon Mr Ackroyd came in for consent forms and explained all risks. Also stressed if for whatever reason bypass was not possible wanted permission to then do sleeve. all seemed very routine.
930 am The other lady was taken down.
1050 am Janet's turn. Staff lovely and very informative.
Told us Op was about 40 to 60 mins on average, Half an hour in recovery room and then half an hour back in HDU to get her settled and then I could come back in.
1 pm was told to wait in lounge whilst they checked on ward, took me another hour to get on HDU (they had assured me all was well at 1pm but I had to wait??? anyway)
2pm Saw Janet she was hooked up to Catheter, Blood pressure heart monitors etc.
She was groggy and sleepy but ok slight pain but had been given morphine.
The next 5 hours was just constant monitoring and checking etc Janet was allowed 50ml water every hour to sip, also little sponges on sticks to moisten lips.
She also had inflating wraps on her lower legs to aid blood flow (prevent DVT).
Janet kept nodding off but generally she did brill, I thought I was the brave one but I need to step up to the plate in 2 weeks!!
7.30pm I left Janet sleeping.
Thanks for nice messages everyone.
